Incorporate these refrigerator maintenance tips into your spring cleaning schedule to insure your refrigerator is running as efficiently as possible and to help to avoid costly refrigerator repairs.

Your refrigerator is probably the most expensive appliance you own. A refrigerator runs more than any of the appliances in your home, making it the biggest energy consumer of your home appliances. To keep your refrigerator running efficiently and to avoid costly refrigerator repairs, here are some basic spring cleaning tips.

One of the most important tips is to keep the refrigerator coils free of dust. The coils on your refrigerator are typically located in the rear of your refrigerator on the bottom. Simply pull your refrigerator away from the wall and then vacuum the dust off them. Some coils are located behind the grill or kick plate on the front of the refrigerator at the bottom, for this model simply remove the kick plate and vacuum the dust from the coils. Please remember clearance is very important for airflow around your refrigerator. You should be able to slide your hand behind your refrigerator. This will insure that air can move to help remove heat from the unit.

Another important refrigerator maintenance tip is to pull out the drip pan, empty and clean it with soapy water. Please keep in mind some drip pans cannot be removed. Frost free refrigerators have a defrost process during which water flows out of a drain in the floor of the refrigerator and into the drip pan. The water remains there until it evaporates. Sometimes the drain gets clogged with small particles of food and the tube will need to be cleared by inserting a pipe cleaner and flushing the tube with water. Be sure the drip pan is still in place to catch the excess water if your drain is clogged and to remove and clean the drip pan after flushing the drain tube.

The refrigerator door gaskets can be kept in shape by washing them gently with soapy water. Keeping the gaskets clean will help to insure there is a solid seal keeping the cold air in and the warm air out.

Incorporating these refrigerator maintenance tips into your spring cleaning schedule every year will extend the life of your appliance and reduce your energy costs throughout the year.
