Kaiser Permanente Southern California, which provides health coverage to over 3 million Southern California residents, announced today its roll-out of an online personal fitness and training service pilot program, called FitOrbit, to selected members who are struggling to lose weight.

FitOrbit will provide a limited number of members with a dedicated, online, certified personal trainer who will provide each participant with a customized, personal daily workout and nutrition plan, designed to help patients fight obesity and other preventable diseases.

“Preventing illness and promoting wellness are the top priorities at Kaiser Permanente. Collaborating with FitOrbit provides Kaiser Permanente members with a customized personal fitness and nutrition solution that has measurable results,” says Jeffrey Weisz, MD, executive medical director of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

FitOrbit founder and fitness industry pioneer Jake Steinfeld, Chairman of Body By Jake Global, says, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Getting people to lose weight and get in shape is the best way to prevent many health issues in the first place. Therefore, we are thrilled to be working with Kaiser Permanente – the leader in innovative preventive health care—on this pilot.”

Kaiser Permanente’s FitOrbit pilot is part of a national trend in healthcare focused on improving American’s health by decreasing obesity. The program will roll-out April 2010.

Launched in June 2009, FitOrbit provides personal fitness and weight loss training over the internet. 79% of active FitOrbit users seeking to lose 25 or more pounds see consistent weight loss of 1 to 2 lbs/week with the help of their FitOrbit trainer. FitOrbit arms its hundreds of certified personal trainers with Web and mobile training, monitoring, and support tools to infuse accessibility, accountability, and measurability into the delivery of one-on-one personal training over the internet.

How the FitOrbit/Kaiser Permanente Program Works
Members of Kaiser Permanente Southern California who are 29 to 45 years old, and 25 or more pounds overweight, with regular Internet access at home or work, will be selected by a designated ‘Fitness Champion’ physician.

Selected Kaiser Permanente members will receive 13 weeks of FitOrbit. Each member will receive one-on-one personal training and meal planning with their FitOrbit personal trainer of choice. FitOrbit personal trainers will deliver weekly workout and meal plans, offer unlimited access and support, and provide motivation.

Participants will log their daily fitness activities, including what they actually ate for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, and what exercises they accomplished. FitOrbit personal trainers monitor and track participant activity logging to provide time-sensitive fitness guidance and workout and meal plan modifications to accommodate any challenges that arise during the week.

Kaiser Permanente members who would like to take part in the FitOrbit program can contact Kaiser Permanente’s Healthy Living Helpline for more information at 1-866-402-4320 (toll free). Non Kaiser Permanente members interested in the FitOrbit program can visit http://www.FitOrbit.com.
