“The Five-Star rating is a complicated system, and better understanding of how each component and data source is measured is critical to the success of a facility,” explained Tamar Abell, Principal, Upstairs Solutions and LTC facility owner

To address CMS’ new Five-Star Quality Rating System, Upstairs Solutions and PointRight have joined forces to create the "Five-Star Quality Rating System - What You Need to Know" online training module. The new module, one of more than 100 online courses offered by Upstairs Solutions, was designed to help long term care providers achieve the highest rating and drive facility census.
CMS established the rating system to empower residents and families with a standard comparison by which to understand the quality of care a facility has to offer. “Families and residents aren’t the only ones looking at this rating, it’s also being used by insurers and financial planners to determine the risks of doing business with these long term care providers,” commented Steven Littlehale, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at PointRight. “Teaming with Upstairs Solutions was a great way to take advantage of their quality online training development capabilities and help PointRight clients and other providers to better assess their vulnerabilities with Five-Star Rating.”
The module walks through the new rating process and explains how a facility is audited based on three categories of data -- health inspections, staffing and quality measures. Highly designed graphics and an easy-to-follow narrative enables viewers to understand what data is examined for each of the categories, how it is calculated, and what impact that data has on the overall score. The module also clearly defines rating terminology and details the link between data and specific components of the annual survey including completed CMS forms.
“The Five-Star rating is a complicated system, and better understanding of how each component and data source is measured is critical to the success of a facility,” explained Tamar Abell, Principal, Upstairs Solutions and owner of more than eight long term care facilities in the US.
