Restaurant owner Dan Epstein had a problem. Increasingly long lines at his popular fast casual restaurant Eppie’s in downtown Charlottesville, VA, were turning away regular customers. Software developer and frequent Eppie’s customer Brian Williford had a solution: create a mobile and online ordering application that allowed regular customers to place their orders from their mobile device or computer ahead of time.

Epstein’s belief in the possibilities led to him to step back from operations at Eppie’s to form OrderTopia with Williford. Their first task was finding a technology-friendly restaurant owner to serve as a beta-testing partner for the new system. They found one close by in Northern Virginia-based Elevation Burger CEO Hans Hess. Epstein, “As soon as I mentioned iPhone ordering to Hans, he said ‘we need to have that!’” After that phone call, when Hess agreed to work with OrderTopia, Epstein pumped his fist in celebration.

OrderTopia raised capital from local investor John McAllister who also counts Eppie’s among his favorite lunching spots. “When I saw Dan’s enthusiasm after getting that first commitment from Hans, I knew that OrderTopia was something that I wanted to be a part of,” says McAllister.

OrderTopia just launched the first version of the Elevation Burger iPhone App, which is now available for download in the iPhone App Store. iPhone and online ordering is live at seven Elevation Burgers nationwide.

Customers can create an order, choose a pick up time, and pay for their order using their iPhone or computer. OrderTopia holds the order for Elevation Burger until it’s time to begin preparing the order, at which time the order prints at Elevation Burger, just like orders placed in the store.

“We built this system to run directly through the restaurants’ existing point of sale system (FireFly). This frees up front of house staff to focus on in-store customers and doesn’t require any changes to kitchen procedures already in place,” says Epstein.

With little marketing, customers are already taking advantage of the service at Elevation Burger, Eppie’s, and the recently added Revolutionary Soup in Charlottesville. Next up for OrderTopia is Rise Pizza, a newcomer to the Charlottesville restaurant scene.

OrderTopia o!ers branded iPhone apps and online ordering systems for $100 per month plus 2% of each mobile or online transaction. OrderTopia apps and online ordering are available for free to restaurant customers.
