SchoolMessenger's Ocean Voices Classroom Contest Allows Teachers and Students To Lend their Voices in Support of Ocean Conservation

SchoolMessenger, a leading provider of parent notification services for schools and districts, today announced its sponsorship of Ocean Voices, a collaborative project aimed at opening minds and expanding awareness about the world's oceans. Ocean Voices is a collaboration between marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols and sound artist Halsey Burgund in which a global collection of recordings about personal experiences with the ocean will be set to music. The resulting audio collage will be showcased in museums and education institutions worldwide, and will debut in a special performance at the San Francisco California Academy of Sciences on June 3.

To celebrate the project, the company launched SchoolMessenger's Ocean Voices Classroom Contest. The contest is designed to honor educators who inspire exploration, study and protection of our natural world. The teacher who inspires the largest number of students to participate in the Ocean Voices project will receive an all-expense paid VIP trip to San Francisco to take part in the debut of the Ocean Voices project and to celebrate World Oceans Day and the 100th anniversary of Jacques Cousteau's birthday. The special event will be held on June 3 at the California Academy of Sciences. In addition, SchoolMessenger will provide the Grand Prize winning teacher with a two-year subscription to its Classroom Messaging service.

To participate, students create a short online audio recording to share their personal experiences, thoughts or stories about the ocean. Some voices may be used to create online audio collages, consolidated into the composition that debut in June, or tapped as raw material for future compositions. As audio collages become accessible online, the goal is to spread those voices around the world in a unique and personal way.

"The Ocean Voices project is designed to bring together a global community to emphasize the importance of ocean conservation as a global issue," said Dr. Nichols. "By focusing on the individual, and his or her thoughts about the ocean, we hope to make our message both personal and impactful. We appreciate the support SchoolMessenger has given and look forward to helping teachers and students lend their voices to a very worthy cause."

"For more than a decade, SchoolMessenger's headquarters have been located in Santa Cruz along the most beautiful stretch of ocean imaginable," said Kent Lowry, chief executive officer of SchoolMessenger. "We feel a strong commitment to ocean conservation and believe the Ocean Voices project presents an excellent opportunity to not only rally the global community around this important issue, but to actually give them an opportunity to have their voices heard. We are honored to lend our assistance and excited to introduce Ocean Voices to students and educators whose actions today can have a tremendous influence on our oceans tomorrow."

The Grand Prize winner will be announced May 19. SchoolMessenger will also award 25 teachers with high student participation levels with admission passes to Ocean Voices NightLife event at California Academy of Sciences. Students of the Grand Prize winning teacher will receive free movie passes.
