Leanne Goebel’s Art Writer blog was awarded First Place in the Top of the Rockies regional contest hosted by the Society of Professional Journalists. The contest was open to all members of the SPJ in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming and received 508 entries in multiple categories for 2010.

The judges said of Goebel’s Art Writer blog that “this blog is unique, helpful to a variety of artists, had good archives and multi-media.”

Goebel started the Art Writer blog in 2005 and covers the visual, performing, musical and movement arts. Originally a place to centrally locate her published works, Goebel began creating unique material for the blog after winning a 2007 Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for short form writing. Her project was to write about contemporary art around the world for a rural audience in SW Colorado via the Durango Herald, but the newspaper was only interested in articles that had a local angle. Goebel believed that by bringing the wider art world to art enthusiasts in rural Colorado that she could help influence the reader’s experience of art and broaden their exposure to more than just local and regional aesthetics. So she began posting the articles on her blog and has gathered a small, but steady following of those interested in how the Rocky Mountain West and Southwest intersect the International contemporary art world.

In 2008, she added her Manifesto to the blog, which includes the following ideas:

The role of fine art is not to report the visible, but to reveal and communicate the unknown
I believe art and artists are valuable and important members of society who transform individual lives through their aesthetic expression.
Art is more than a marketing slogan, a brand, or a PR stunt’ it is the transmission of feeling’s the artist has experienced.
Art Criticism is alive and well and more important than ever in this age of cultural and information overload.

Goebel is a freelance writer and has been featured in diverse publications from Art Ltd. magazine to Cowboys & Indians to Public Art Review. She is also the Senior Editor for the online magazine and her work has been included on Saatchi Online Magazine, Art Tattler, Arts Journal, Art Daily, Visual Art Source and the List Weiss email newsletter. She was one of twelve U.S. writers selected to participate in the 2009 NEA International Arts Journalism Institute in the Visual Arts.

The Top of the Rockies contest is one of the few journalism contests to survey the best of the new convergent media landscape in the Rocky Mountain West. Rather than gear their competition to the traditional metrics of printed circulation, SPJ includes two online divisions based upon number of employees. The online categories reflect the way news has migrated to the web in recent years. Goebel’s award is in the smaller E category.
