Phillip’s Interior Plants & Displays is among the first twenty businesses in the U.S. to become Green Earth—Green Plants® certified for it’s environmentally sound interiorscape business.

“We know that plants help improve indoor air quality, and caring for them in a responsible manner is crucially important for the environment, as well."

Phillip’s Interior Plants & Displays was recently named one of the first twenty businesses to become Green Earth—Green Plants® certified. “They have proven that they are an environmentally-responsible business and operate in an ecologically-friendly manner,” said Kathy Fediw, LEED AP, CLP, CLT, president of Johnson Fediw Associates and founder of the certification program.

A division of family-owned Phillip’s Flowers & Gifts, Phillip’s Interior Plants & Displays is an interior plantscaping business that designs, installs, and maintains green and blooming plants in office buildings, banks, hotels, malls and other public indoor spaces throughout Chicago and suburbs. “We know that plants help improve indoor air quality, and caring for them in a responsible manner is crucially important for the environment, as well,” said Fediw.

Thanks to research by NASA, the University of Minnesota and Texas A&M, Phillip’s already knew that its plants were good for indoor environments, naturally filtering out harmful air pollutants and boosting workplace productivity. But, according to company chairman, Jim Phillip, “We want to be sure our own practices, as well as our products, are environmentally responsible.”

The certification is based on a 17-page assessment with supporting documentation required for each credit claimed. Interiorscape businesses are rated on their indoor and outdoor facilities, vehicle usage, recycling programs, horticultural practices, staff education and giving back to the community. Jean Berg, Division Manager of Phillip’s Interior Plants & Displays, explained that, “We scored extremely well in recycling practices and limiting transportation and fuel usage by staff members.” Berg’s division also uses pesticide-free, non-chemical methods to prevent insect problems.

“We are proud to recognize their achievements and know they will set an example for other businesses in the Chicago area to operate in a more earth-friendly manner,” said Fediw.

Johnson Fediw Associates is an independent consulting firm specializing in the interior plantscape industry and green certification. It’s mission is to educate, recognize, certify and promote those businesses using environmentally sound practices, establish standards within the industry, and support research and education for the use of indoor plants and eco-friendly horticultural practices.
