You Can’t Always Get What You Want by Sam Cutler (ECW Press and Expanded Books/Apps/Ironic Apps, April 2010) is a magnificent account of the life and times of Sam Cutler with the Rolling Stones, then the Grateful Dead in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As tour manager for the Stones he played a pivotal role at a watershed moment in American history: the infamous concert at Altamont Speedway, where a young man named Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death by a Hells Angel in front of the stage.
The release of Cutler’s work is the first simultaneous North American release of a book and its multimedia iPhone application and it will be the first to be launched with a multimedia webshow that will be streamed live to the iPhone, giving fans the opportunity to talk directly with the author and download the app from iTunes at the same time—from one device.
The webshow utilizes cutting-edge video streaming and television technology to broadcast chats in real time, via the internet. Each chat is a fully produced and customized live webshow where up to four people can communicate with each other simultaneously via video webcam while many more participate via chat and thousands can watch.
The Cutler iPhone application contains the full audiobook synchronized with the text, video links to two interviews with the author and clips from Altamont, more than 30 photos, (some exclusive to the app). With this Expanded Book™ developed by Expanded Apps, Inc., in association with Ironic Apps, readers can simultaneously follow the words on the screen and listen as Sam Cutler recounts his own amazing life with the Stones and Grateful Dead.
Jack David of Toronto-based ECW Press says, “We’re thrilled to work with Expanded Books/Apps and Sam Cutler on the simultaneous release of this fascinating memoir. We’re breaking new ground promotionally with this webshow and also by coordinating our publicity and marketing efforts, with the aim of gaining more exposure for the book and attracting more readers on whatever platform they choose.”
“As an author, I want to reach readers everywhere and through the webshow and iPhone app, I can talk to readers all over the world and they can experience my book in a way that was never before possible,” explains Sam Cutler.
Skye Van Raalte-Herzog, CEO, of Expanded Apps says, “Our custom, multimedia book applications take advantage of the powerful features of the iPhone and iPad to present content in new and engaging ways. Our goal is to create entertaining multimedia reading experiences—combining content from traditional books with the multimedia capabilities of the iPhone and iPad. We recognize the huge potential to reach a new generation of readers with this technology, as the portability and flexibility the platform offers is unprecedented. We now have the opportunity to transform the art of reading into a multimedia content experience."
Mr Cutler is currently on a North American tour to promote the release of the book, tour cities include Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, New York and London, England. The book and iPhone app will be featured as the Video Book Club pick of the week on April 20 on The Daily Buzz, a weekday, national morning show which reaches more than 62 million TV households in the U.S. and Expanded Books has also produced a 30 second TV spot that will run weekly on The Daily Buzz for eight weeks.
