The FORWARD, America’s most influential Jewish weekly newspaper and website, has been selected among finalists of The Deadline Club Awards honoring the best in New York area journalism distributed in 2009. Selected for finalists in the categories of news reporting, arts reporting, and opinion writing, the winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on Monday, June 7, 2010.
Selected as finalists in the news reporting category for publications with a circulation under 100,000 are Jane Eisner, editor of the FORWARD; Gabrielle Birkner, web editor; and Devra Ferst, editorial assistant, for “Few Jewish Workplaces Have Family Friendly Policies” and “Jewish Women Lag Behind Men in Promotion and Pay.” Selected for Arts Reporting is contributor Benjamin Ivry’s “From the Kol Israel Orchestra to a Pygmy Choir.” For the category of Opinion Writing is contributor Jay Michaelson’s “How I’m Losing My Love for Israel,” “A ‘New Jew’ Goes to Auschwitz” and “Do Jews Have a Jesus Problem?”

The winners will be announced on June 7, at an awards dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. Robert Thomson, managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and editor-in-chief of Dow Jones & Co., will be the keynote
speaker at the dinner.
Each year, The Deadline Club, the New York chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, presents the winners of its contest with the Club’s coveted “Rubes,” statuettes designed by the artist Rube Goldberg. The awards honor the best in New York area journalism that was printed, broadcast or otherwise distributed in the previous year.
