Bob Degnan of Madison, Wisconsin will be testing for his 3rd degree blackbelt at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The test starts at 4:00pm and is scheduled to last approximately five hours.
Degnan began his martial arts career in 1993 after helping his children get started in the activity. Degnan has three children all of whom took lessons in the 1990’s and inspired him to train thus making the martial arts an activity his entire family participated in together. Degnan’s son, Seth holds a 4th Degree Blackbelt in American Tae Kwon Do and is co-owner of Kicks Unlimited Sun Prairie along with his wife, Jen Degnan, whom also is a blackbelt.
Bob Degnan is a student at Kicks Unlimited Sun Prairie and will test along with 24 other students of ages as young as 9 years old. Degnan is the oldest student to test as well as the most advanced student. Students from all Kicks Unlimited locations will be represented at the testing which occurs bi-annually in Madison, Wisconsin.
The event is expected to draw more than 500 spectators and is free of charge. Candidates will be tested on cardiovascular fitness, balance, self-defense, sparring, kata (form), as well as a myriad of other physical and mental challenges.
“The martial arts has helped me to build my confidence and self-esteem a great deal. The experience I’ve had has been incredible—I’ve gotten to know so many great people that I would truly consider to be family. In regards to the test, I’m not actually too nervous because I know I’m going to be tired and all I can do is do my best.”
