In a few months when “I Wanna Be The One,” 15-year-old Filipino-American electro pop/hip hop singer Gahlya’s grooving twist on Stevie B’s late 80s hit, is a worldwide dance sensation, people are going to want to know: What’s in a name?
“Gahlya” is adapted from the moniker Adi Gallia, a “Star Wars” female jedi master under the call sign “Shooting Star”—perfect for the powerhouse, multi-talented artist as she gears up to hit the dance charts with her debut track, set to drop May 4 with worldwide distribution through Universal Republic Digital/Dauman Music.
Gahlya and “I Wanna Be The One” are primed to be the latest in a long line of global dance smashes released these past few years by Jason Dauman of Dauman Music.
His artists have become a constant presence on the Billboard Club charts with close to 30 chart singles in four years. With seven chart singles in 2008, the company topped such labels as Warner (six), Jive (six) and Columbia (six) on the hot dance/club play imprint category. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, Dauman was able to place 3 different artists in the Billboard Top 50 Club Charts on the same week, representing a whopping 6 % of the Dance Chart.
Dauman Music’s most recent successes include Carmen Perez’s “Overload,” which was #7 on the Music Week commercial pop charts last week and Jackie Siebert, who was the #4 Billboard Breakout artist last week.
Gahlya’s “I Wanna Be The One” was produced by Manny Mijares, owner and executive record producer of Upscale Recording, a music company that has worked with R&B greats like Musiq Soulchild and Christina Milian; Mijares has also worked with legendary hip-hop figures like Snoop Dogg.
She is scheduled to return to Los Angeles this summer to record her debut album for his label.
Gahlya (real name: Rachel Razon) has performed as an opening act for The Dream, the Grammy award winning R&B singer/songwriter The Dream (co-writer of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” and Milian at the UC Irvine Bren Events Center in Southern California. She originally met Miajres when the teen joined the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood.
“I knew ‘I Wanna Be The One’ even before Manny told me he thought it would be a good fit for me to record,” says Gahlya. “It’s a very young, fresh song and it’s fun to bring the perspective of a 15-year-old girl to it. It’s about the kind of love girls my age can totally relate to.”
