Each year we look at what we have as far as our Bordeaux varietals for the Meritage blend. We then come up with 2-3 blends that we enjoy and make sense for the wines available. We trust our wine club to pick their favorite."

Cougar Vineyard and Winery has determined that the long awaited award winning 2007 Meritage is ready to make its' public appearance. As with all Cougar Temecula wine, Cougar releases fine wines when they are ready to amaze customer's taste buds in Cougar's premier and fun Temecula wine tasting room.

The Meritage is part of the nine wines currently available while Temecula wine tasting at Cougar. Cougar's specialty is Italian varietals but the Meritage is one of their few non-Italian wine exceptions. The Meritage blend is selected each June by the Cougar Wine Club members. Jennifer Buffington, owner and winemaker, teaches the blending party attendees the UC Davis 20-point system which they then judge several blends to pick the next Meritage. That blend is then bottled in July, bottle aged for approximately a year, then released at the next June Meritage party.

A red wine Meritage blend is made up of two or more of the Bordeaux varietals allowed. Most Meritage wines include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, and/or Malbec. Meritage is a made-up word standing for Merit and Heritage (rhymes with Heritage). The 2007 Cougar Meritage is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc.

Rick Buffington, owner and winemaker, said "Each year we look at what we have as far as our Bordeaux varietals for the Meritage blend. We then come up with 2-3 blends that we enjoy and make sense for the wines available. We trust our wine club to pick their favorite." The grapes in this wine are all estate grown which allows more control over the quality of the grapes to produce better wines.

Rick and Jennifer Buffington are the owners and winemakers of Cougar Vineyard and Winery located in the Temecula Valley Wine Country. This small boutique winery is a favorite stop for Temecula Wine Tasting. Cougar is a member of the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association and also the Meritage Association.
