Gerry Asmus, an independent singer / songwriter has taken on former British chart toppers Rik Mayall and Chico in the World Cup Song Competition (http://www.worldcupsong.com) with his number 1 entry "It's Our Game".
In January of this year, England's Football Association announced that they would break from tradition and not select an official song for the English team. A YouTube based song competition in which there are now over 170 entries, has opened the floodgates for patriotic songwriters to fill the void.
In the British spirit of Drake, Nelson, Wellington, Montgomery, and Dr. Who vs. The Daleks, this underdog is fighting against the odds, and prevailing with over 100,000 votes.
With patriotic words such as "In planes that spit fire" and "You've got the heart of a lion", he has captured the imagination of the English fans. "It's Our Game" is a family friendly song written to help cheer on the England team.
The video can be seen on Gerry's website http://www.gerryasmus.com and the song is available for download on iTunes.
