Interviews four women CFO’s on collaboration, team building and decision making

“Talking to the women in this article was an eye-opening experience.” Patrick Sweeney - President Caliper

Caliper is proud to announce that its President Patrick Sweeney has co-authored the cover story for the April 2010 issue of Financial Executive.

Dr. Herb Greenberg, Founder and CEO of Caliper, says, “Patrick has phenomenal interviewing skills and this cover story further illustrates his talent. Whether it was our radio show, in our New York Times Bestseller, “Succeed On Your Own Terms” or conducting a webinar, Patrick is always able to put people at ease and get them to openly share their viewpoints and opinions.”

In the article, Mr. Sweeney interviews Cindy J. Gustafson, director of finance and controller for The Seattle Times, Eileen F. Burza, vice president and chief financial officer of Perdue Farms Inc., Carol B . Zoellner, corporate controller for Hallmark Cards Inc., and Andee G. Petersen, CFO of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Mid-Atlantic States Region.

The cover story, titled “Fab Four: Female Finance Leaders Talk about Clarity, Collaboration, and Decision Making in Extraordinary Times,” discusses the changing role of CFOs during the current economic crisis. In addition, because of Caliper’s extensive work with female executives, the article also discusses the unique perspective women have when it comes to leading an organization and making decisions.

As Carol B . Zoellner from Hallmark Cards, says in the feature, "I'm a visual person, so I try to get experts in the room and I start drawing pictures of the problem. They coach me, by adding to the picture. In this way, everyone has a chance to give us all the pieces that we need to consider before we make the final call."

“Talking to the women in this article was an eye-opening experience,” concedes Mr. Sweeney. “How they go about analyzing and solving business problems is incredibly unique and thought provoking, not to mention how they work in collaboration with others. It’s something we can all learn from.”

"Collaborating, ultimately, takes clarity and an environment that encourages teamwork, rather than hero-worshipping," states Andee G. Petersen of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan in the Financial Executive article.

Mr. Sweeney sums it up by saying, “We are undergoing a paradigm shift in how businesses operate, how choices are made and how teams collaborate. This article articulates that change by showing how these CFOs helped their organizations through the tough times so that they could once again prosper.”
