L.A.-based design company TOUCH is excited to present an exhibition featuring the work of product and furniture designers from Portugal and Brazil. Curated by Zoë Melo and coinciding with ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair), INTER-CONNECTED will showcase a group of designers that challenge the old and push the boundaries of the new, while at the same time not forgetting, but embracing their heritage and culture. Distinctive in personality and style, the designers work seemingly un-connected within the market dynamics of their respective countries, yet they all draw inspiration from a shared cultural heritage. Representing Brazil are Brunno Jahara, Domingos Tótora, Estúdio Manus (Caio de Medeiros Filho, Daniela Scorza), Tátil Design (Fred Gelli), Kimi Nii, Cores da Terra with Guido Deleu, Rodrigo Almeida and TeTe Knetch. Representing Portugal are Krv Kurva (Jorge Moita), SUSdesign (Ana Mestre, Eduardo Gonçalves, Fernando Brízio, José Viana), Pedro Sottomayor, Rita Botelho, Rita Cordeiro, Raquel Soares, Studio Verissimo and The-Home-Project* (Albio Nascimento, Kathi Stertzig).
As part of TOUCH's commitment to foster dialogue, the company will host a design talk during the week, moderated by design critic Frederico Duarte and featuring some of the designers as well as invited guests. A pop-up store will offer a selection of products by various designers for immediate purchase.
Visitors are invited to attend the opening reception on Saturday, May 15, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with specialty cocktails provided by ZICO, at the exhibition space, located on 805 Washington Street (Autospace) in the Meatpacking District, New York.
Says Zoë Melo, co-founder of TOUCH and curator of the exhibit: "Having worked to bring exposure to Brazilian and Portuguese designers since our launch, we believe INTER-CONNECTED comes at the right point in time, not only for TOUCH and the individual designers, but for Portugal and Brazil as design nations. We see this exhibit as another important milestone."
INTER-CONNECTED represents the second time that TOUCH participates in the New York Design Week. In 2008, TOUCH made a splash when it transformed a raw warehouse space in Chelsea where virtually everything presented was eco-friendly and the building itself became part of the installation. TOUCH | NY was an exhibition of sustainable and social design, featuring a variety of furniture, accessories, and on-site installations made from recycled and repurposed materials. The aim of the project was to place the viewer firmly inside the context of the movement by not only showing works comprised of recycled material, but surrounding him or her with it as well, to create a complete experience. It also represented the official launch of TOUCH.
