Huawei Technologies emerges on top as Ericsson drops to second largest for the first time.

Despite the severe economic challenges facing the wireless industry, the global base transmitting station (BTS) transceiver (TRx) market grew by 26.2% in units in 2008, according to the latest report from EJL Wireless Research titled “Global BTS Transceiver Market Analysis and Forecast, 6hEdition, 2009-2014.” “The transceiver market continued to show strong unit growth in 2009 despite the continued global financial crisis,” says founder and President, Earl Lum. The report provides a unique perspective on the global shipments and demand for TRx equipment covering all air interface standards and frequencies and major OEMs including Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei Technologies, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel Networks, and ZTE.

“Huawei Technologies posted another strong year shipment growth due to domestic Chinese operator demand for 3G equipment to unseat Ericsson as the world's largest supplier . Fourth ranked ZTE also posted strong shipment growth and was able to also capitalize on domestic Chinese 3G shipments like Huawei in 2009 to narrow the gap between itself and Nokia Siemens Networks,” says Lum. The overall market is expected to grow slightly in 2010 and moderately in 2011 before declining in 2012. GSM shipments continue to represent the majority of the overall market demand in the forecast declined for the second straight year. We forecast that W-CDMA shipments will surpass GSM shipments by 2011 and that LTE shipments will become the largest segment by 2013.
