Kapsch TrafficCom introduced its tolling equipment based on the 5.9 GHz DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) WAVE (Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment) technology platform at the ITS America Annual Meeting 2010 in Houston, Texas. The 5.9 GHz based tolling transponder TS3304 and the transceiver TRX 9450E bring tolling and additional ITS applications in unmatched performance, speed and accuracy to the market. In addition, the 5.9 GHz equipment is the only tolling platform that delivers banking-grade security at the lane level. Kapsch TrafficCom has been leading the efforts to drive the development of the 5.9 GHz DSRC WAVE platform in the United States and the company is a leading provider for end2end solutions in tolling and ITS worldwide.

One key element of Kapsch TrafficCom’s tolling solution is the TS3304 transponder, a lightweight compact on board unit that features full read/write capabilities. The transponder is fully compliant with the emerging IEEE 802.11p and 1609 standards for WAVE and ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) and features driver feedback functionality. The TS3304/01 model features a self-declaration capability. Pressing a button on the transponder enables the declaration of the number of passengers, which activates a corresponding visual signal via LEDs. Kapsch is also presenting the TRX 9450E transceiver at the 2010 ITS America Annual Meeting. This new generation roadside infrastructure device enables wireless communication based on 5.9 GHz DSRC with on-board units offering a significant increase in accuracy in high-speed open road tolling.
The introduced components enable also a high increase in localization capability, meaning the system can tell exactly in which lane a particular transponder is travelling at any time. This capability paired with the self-declaration feature of the transponder makes the Kapsch system the perfect solution for High Occupancy Tolling (HOT) environment.
