In a move to streamline its analytic efficiency, California State University Channel Islands has expanded its business intelligence capabilities with predictive modeling technology from Rapid Insight Inc. Already a user of Rapid Insight’s reporting and ad hoc analysis technology (Veera), Channel Islands has turned to Rapid Insight Analytics for its predictive modeling needs.
Opened in 2002, Channel Islands joined California’s public university system with the goal of developing and building a “university for the 21st century,” which has been a community vision for over four decades. As the school plans to expand from its current 3,800 student population to as many as 15,000 full-time students by the year 2025, Channel Islands faces the significant challenge of using limited resources to manage a huge recruitment and retention effort. Software from Rapid Insight stands to be a big part of the solution.
“As a new university, Channel Islands is still in the stage of setting up many of the procedures and practices that older institutions have already established,” explains Dr. Nelle Moffett, Director of Institutional Research & Assessment at CSU Channel Islands. “To make up for this, we are committed to using data to help drive our decision-making. Analytics will help us provide a link between our raw institutional data and our ability to quickly act on that data through the efficient use of predictive models.”
Rapid Insight Analytics identifies statistical relationships in data and empowers users to easily build predictive models. By simplifying and automating the predictive modeling process, Rapid Insight technologies enable institutions of higher education to fully utilize their data, saving valuable time and money. The resulting information will help Channel Islands to categorize both prospective and current students and then craft cost-effective and efficient strategies to manage recruitment and retention.
“Our focus is on helping colleges and universities like Channel Islands quickly extract the information they need from their data to make vital decisions,” says Michael Laracy, CEO of Rapid Insight. “By enabling them to optimize their analytic capabilities, our software allows institutions to understand their data and spend more time on the most important issues, such as student success and institutional effectiveness.”
The burgeoning relationship between Channel Islands and Rapid Insight began in early 2009 when the university first drew upon Rapid Insight Veera to quickly produce actionable reports and information from their data. The software also enabled the university’s institutional research team to respond to ad hoc requests in support of grant writing, strategic initiatives, and administrative decision-making. With their reporting and ad hoc analysis requirements now under control, Dr. Moffett affirms that Channel Islands is looking to take its analytic approach to the next level. “I have had years of experience with programming in SAS and SPSS, but after attending a webinar, all I needed to see was how easily models could be built with Rapid Insight Analytics to know that we should make the switch.”
In November 2009, Dr. Moffett gave a presentation at the annual conference of the California Association for Institutional Research that highlighted her use of Veera in addressing real data requests. Building upon the success of that presentation, Channel Islands will participate in an upcoming webinar to demonstrate how an institution utilizes Rapid Insight products for retention analysis, IR reporting, and enrollment management.
The webinar will be held on May 19, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. EDT. To register:
