Ning network creators do still have a free option. GROU.PS, the largest competitor of Ning, adds the OpenSocial support and makes the transition of Ning apps possible.

GROU.PS, the world's most flexible white label social networking platform, today announces the alpha availability of the OpenSocial support on their platform. The announcement comes amidst Ning's anticipated closure of free networks on May 4th, 2010. GROU.PS' OpenSocial container currently renders canvas mode apps only and supports the basic PersonService.

With this announcement, GROU.PS, the largest competitor of Ning, also becomes the second white label social networking platform that supports OpenSocial.

"GROU.PS has been supporting 3rd party apps through an open source module submission program that barely worked due to the lack of a testing environment for app developers but we are very optimistic about the opportunities that the OpenSocial brings," said Emre Sokullu, the founder and CEO of the Palo Alto based company. "GROU.PS was originally planning to support Facebook Platform due to its extensive app ecosystem. However, the requests of the migrating Ning network creators pushed us to reevaluate our roadmap, and we decided to welcome existing Ning apps onto our platform first."

However, current limitations may prevent many Ning apps to be ported to GROU.PS. The company says that they are continuously improving the platform and the full compatibility with Ning is expected to arrive within a month.

GROU.PS also announced that the company hit another milestone last week, with the registration of the 3 millionth member. "We are experiencing an amazing exponential growth here, we reached 1 million members in 3 years, 2 million members in 6 months and 3 million members in just 4 months," said Emre Sokullu. The company has added more than 10k groups in just a week after Ning's announcement and is nearing towards the milestone of 100k groups. Some of the networks that moved to the GROU.PS platform are:
