The digital water coolers of social networking and mobile communities are increasingly apt barometers of moviegoers’ habits and tastes.

Today's premiere of 'Iron Man 2' ushers in 2010's highly anticipated summer movie season. Robert Downey Jr.'s smooth-talking superhero isn't the only popular character reuniting with audiences; in the next month the casts of 'Sex and the City' and 'Twilight' return as well. Snackable Media's popular prediction community, Predicto Mobile, is currently weighing in on which sequel will triumph at the box office. Current results at Predicto.com show 48% of voters predict that Bella and Edward will 'Eclipse' the competition. 'Iron Man 2' follows close behind with 41% of the votes, while 'Sex and the City 2' received an unfashionable 11%.
The community's prediction is well-founded. 'New Moon,' the second movie in the 'Twilight' saga, achieved an astounding $142 million in its box office debut, compared to the $98 million made by the original 'Iron Man.' In fact, Predicto's voters have an excellent track record for predicting success at the box office; their voting often foretells which Hollywood flicks will be the year's biggest blockbusters.
Predicto members also anticipated 2009's most surprising success. Last June, the big-budget remake of 'Land of the Lost' received a lot of attention due to its expensive special effects and A-list star, Will Ferrell. Despite the film's pre-premiere hype, 59 % of mobile voters accurately predicted that 'The Hangover' would have a more profitable opening weekend than 'Land of the Lost.' Audience engagement offered an additional indicator of the movie's immense popularity - the survey received an astounding 32,000 votes within a 48-hour period.
So far this year, the Predicto Mobile community's accuracy in forecasting 2010's biggest moneymakers has been consistent. When asked to predict whether 'Valentine's Day' or 'Dear John' would win moviegoers' affections in February, Predicto voters correctly crowned the all-star romantic comedy 'Valentine's Day' as the box office champ. When Tim Burton's 3D version of 'Alice in Wonderland' took the IMAX route to attract big ticket receipts, 76% of Predicto members rightly guessed that the film would earn more than $70 million its opening weekend.
Predicto members receive the "box office" questions on their mobile phones on Fridays, when many people are making decisions about which flicks to see that weekend. The digital water coolers of social networking and mobile communities, such as Predicto, are increasingly apt barometers of moviegoers' habits and tastes.
