School district deploys OpenDNS to secure its guest wireless network across 22 sites, saving the school district money and network bandwidth.

OpenDNS, provider of the world's leading Internet navigation and security services that make networks safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced that the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District has deployed OpenDNS' Web content filtering services to secure its guest wireless network against inappropriate content that complies with district policies. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District (CHCCS) employs OpenDNS' cloud-based security solution at nearly all of its facilities: four high schools, four middle schools, ten elementary schools, and four office sites.

CHCCS implemented OpenDNS as a mechanism for protecting users of its guest wireless Internet--purposely separated from the internal network--from accessing objectionable content. Before using OpenDNS, no Web content filtering occurred on the guest wireless network, and users could access inappropriate content freely. After speaking with outside experts, OpenDNS emerged as the best option to secure these networks and protect CHCCS' guest wireless Internet users without adding a financial burden to the school district, costly appliances, or more administrative overhead. Lara Farrar, the WAN Specialist for the district, estimates that using OpenDNS saved CHCCS nearly $30,000 in hardware costs alone, along with a 10% reduction in wireless bandwidth usage. OpenDNS' robust statistics reporting has also benefitted the district as they monitor network usage.

"OpenDNS provided a perfect solution for us. We are managing 25 networks, and OpenDNS has simplified our filtering process as well as trimmed our bandwidth needs, while also providing detailed statistics. I love that it just works!" Farrar said. "I most certainly would recommend OpenDNS to other systems administrators."
