Vine Hill Winery Forges 'Sea Change' Alliance With Seymour Marine Discovery Center At Long Marine Lab, Santa Cruz

Vine Hill Winery, one of the Santa Cruz Mountains wine growing region’s most historic viticultural treasures, and the Seymour Marine Discovery Center at the Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory, an esteemed research and education facility of the University of California, Santa Cruz, today announced that they have forged a charitable alliance designating Vine Hill, with its new “Sea Change” Pinot Noir, as the center’s exclusive primary wine sponsor for all major center events, in addition to five-percent of the wine’s net profits from sales to be distributed to the center.

Vine Hill Winery, with historic roots dating back to 1867, when the renowned Jarvis Brother’s Union Vineyard occupied the vintner’s present site, has a keen interest in giving back to the community of Santa Cruz, which has been both inspirational and supportive of the winery’s growth since it was founded in 2004. It is therefore only fitting, and in the spirit of fostering further harmony and balance between the fruits of the land and the bounty of the sea, that Vine Hill Winery and the Seymour Center should partner to raise the public’s awareness of the wonders of the waters and habitat of Monterey Bay and the viticultural attributes of the lands that encircle it.

Vines-To-The-Sea Connection
Vine Hill Winery has produced an exclusive wine that pays tribute to the crucial connection between the shores and terrain around Monterey Bay, and the bay’s tributaries, inlets, sloughs, tide pools, waters and beyond. With the debut release of the new Vine Hill 2008 Sea Change Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir, the wine’s distinctive label depicts the winery and vineyards perched high atop the Santa Cruz Mountains with its panoramic view of the bay, juxtaposed with a subtle background of Pacific Kelp, representing the home of one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems that thrives in the body of water below.

Seymour Center’s director, Julie Barrett Heffington, noted, “We’re very excited to have the opportunity to establish this unique connection with a local, historic and award-winning winery like Vine Hill. But, more significantly, we value the importance of Vine Hill’s commitment to resource and habitat conservation, and the corresponding role that our center plays in the research, education and study of our unique marine environment. We’re honored to be associated with the winery’s new Sea Change label.”

New “Sea Change” Pinot Noir’s Limited Availability
In support of the Seymour Center, considered by many to be one of the “jewels” that the Santa Cruz region has to offer, Vine Hill Winery’s new Sea Change Pinot Noir will be the exclusive wine sponsor for future center events. Vine Hill will donate a designated number of cases of the wine to the center annually and, will additionally donate five percent of the net profits from the sales of the wine it sells at its tasting room and online store. Friends of the Long Marine Lab are encouraged to become friends of Vine Hill Winery, and visa-versa, marking a uniform and collaborative effort to support the goals of marine science education at the center, helping the public to better understand the need to care and protect Monterey Bay and its many unique ecosystems.

After completing the recent agreement with the Seymour Center, Vine Hill Winery’s marketing director, Lore James, said, “Vine Hill is very proud to support such a strong, well organized and eminent non-profit organization in the Santa Cruz community. Since we share so many goals and ideals — the center, with its focus on the Monterey Bay preservation and education, and ours, directed toward stewardship of the beautiful and bountiful land that surrounds it — it seems only natural that this alliance should be formed.”

The 2008 Vine Hill Winery “Sea Change” Pinot Noir was introduced on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at the Vine Hill Wine Club’s annual barbeque. Futures for this limited production and exclusive wine can be purchased at the tasting room, online or by phone. The formal release of the wine is slated for fall of this year.
