While Dr. Dee always has pertinent and helpful information to share with us, she is also extremely sensitive to our personal needs and is always willing to change her plans to attend to our questions and concerns
Newberg, Ore. (Vocus) May 9, 2010
A professor in George Fox University’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program was named recipient of the school’s Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Teaching for the 2009-10 academic year.
Amy Dee, an assistant professor of education and director of curriculum and assessment for the MAT program, is a cohort leader who teaches classes that include Action Research, Issues in Human Development and Learning Theory. She also co-teaches a class for doctoral students.
Dee specializes in content analysis of teacher work samples, curriculum development and evaluation, and teaching as a vocation. She has presented research for the Oregon Association of Teacher Educators the past two years in the areas of differentiation and cultural competence as they appear in teacher work samples, and she has given workshops to teachers at the Association of Christian Schools International conference.
Dee is currently working on a book project on biblical themes in teaching, and she serves on the George Fox School of Education’s diversity committee. The university’s School of Education confers teaching and counseling degrees.
Ultimately, it’s the impact Dee is making on the teachers of tomorrow that merited her selection for the award.
“The standard that Amy Dee has set for us as teachers has stretched me and challenged me to continually work toward being a better teacher,” said MAT student Brett Sauer. “One thing that I have really appreciated about her is that you can tell that the high standards she has for us are standards that she also holds herself to. She is continually evaluating how the program is going and what she can do to better our education.”
Another student, Anne Muehleck, commended Dee for her personalized instruction: “While Dr. Dee always has pertinent and helpful information to share with us, she is also extremely sensitive to our personal needs and is always willing to change her plans to attend to our questions and concerns,” she said.
Dee teaches in a Master of Arts in Teaching program that offers initial licensure at all four levels of authorization – early childhood, elementary, middle school, and secondary. MAT candidates earn two authorizations at adjacent levels and choose between early childhood/elementary, elementary/middle school or secondary/middle school.
MAT classes are offered at the university’s main residential campus in Newberg, Ore., as well as at centers in Portland (near Tigard), Salem and Redmond, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. More specifics on the program are available at mat.georgefox.edu.
“I love watching my students transition from new graduate students to professional colleagues,” Dee said. “The confidence that they carry the essential knowledge, skills and dispositions into the educational community is very rewarding. I always have amazing students who are willing to work hard and don’t fear questioning current trends in the field. Everyone in the School of Education is worthy of recognition, so winning this award was quite a surprise as well as a tremendous honor.”
Dee earned a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of San Francisco and a bachelor’s degree in social science from San Jose State University. She also holds a doctorate from George Fox.
George Fox University is ranked by Forbes as one of the top 100 colleges in the country and highest among Christian colleges. George Fox is the only Christian university in the Pacific Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a national university. More than 3,300 students attend classes on the university’s campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem, and Redmond, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. George Fox offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, five seminary degrees, and 12 master’s and doctoral degrees.
