Lexi-Comp, Inc., a global provider of clinical information and drug data solutions for healthcare professionals, has earned top ranking in a new study evaluating overall performance of common drug information databases. Published in the current issue of the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy (Can J Hosp Pharm, 2010, 63(2):130-7), the study compares Lexi-Comp ONLINE, Clinical Pharmacology, and Micromedex®, the resources identified as the most commonly used online drug databases within Vancouver Coastal Health - Providence Health Care. Results rank Lexi-Comp ONLINE significantly higher than the other two resources on the basis of quality, performance, and user preference.
Study participants represented a cross section of pharmacists with varying roles at hospital pharmacy sites across the Canadian health region. Eighty-five percent of participants stated they consulted online drug information databases at least daily in their practice. To determine their preferred resource, participants assessed performance of each database by answering 15 questions covering 17 different categories of drug information.
Lexi-Comp ONLINE received the highest score in database quality, where key quality indicators measured included referencing, grading of evidence cited or recommendations provided, editorial policy for content updates, provision of authorship information, and inclusion of Canadian-specific content.
Lexi-Comp ONLINE also earned the highest score when utilized to accurately answer several drug information questions in 3 minutes or less. It outperformed the other databases in several categories, including drug interactions, monitoring, pharmacology, foreign/Canadian/newly approved drugs, and herbal/non-prescription drugs.
Lastly, when ranked by participants in order of preference, Lexi-Comp ONLINE was ranked as the most preferred database by the majority of users.
Overall, Lexi-Comp ONLINE was found to be the highest-quality, best-performing, and most preferred online drug information database among those evaluated. The robust solution offers site-wide access to two levels of drug information, both concise and in-depth, as well as extensive Canadian-specific content. Lexi-Comp employs an internal clinical team, and also maintains a panel of hundreds of practicing contributors in the U.S. and Canada to collect, assimilate, and publish information in a concise, actionable format.
