Some people who raise money for charity run a marathon, complete a triathlon or bike 100 miles. Not Clark Harris, who is currently completing a mental endurance challenge to raise money and create awareness for a cause close to his heart.
On May 1, 2010, Atlanta-based entrepreneur Clark Harris literally put his money where his mouth is by deciding to communicate exclusively via social media for one month to raise awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of his mother, who passed away on February 14, 2009 after a 10-year battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
"The idea came to me when I thought back to my Team in Training Century Ride in 2006,” Harris says. “I raised more than $6,500 for LLS using mainly a direct mail campaign. Since my mother's passing, I've been looking for a bigger challenge to accomplish in her memory. What better challenge for a guy who never shuts up than to not talk for a month?"
Is it possible in today's world of social media to more effectively raise money for a cause online versus traditional methods? Harris is figuring that out as he communicates solely via social media channels in all conversations between friends, coworkers... and even his wife.
“For those who know him, the concept of him not talking for a month is unimaginable,” said Matthew Simpson, Harris’ business partner at PromoterBee.com, an online solution that helps restaurants and retail shops spread the word about their specials and events. “I can't wait to see how he continues to manage adapting to work and social life without the use of his vocal cords.”
Rules and regulations are as follows:
1. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, LinkedIn, and Google Chat, and Blogs are allowed.
2. Email, Talking, writing, text messaging and use of sign language are not allowed.
3. Simple yes/no questions can be answered by nodding head.
