In October 2009 TRS of Oakbrook Terrace reported that there were increasing concerns over credit checks as a part of pre-employment screening.
Now more action is being taken by states to stop this practice, with an exception for certain high security jobs.
TRS career professionals of Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois says that employment credit check concerns are valid, and they now cite a recent Associated Press article that confirms that as many as many as "16 states from South Carolina to Oregon have proposed outlawing most credit checks, saying the practice traps people in debt because (of) past financial problems."
TRS Oakbrook Terrace first reported that Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee was sponsoring a bill that would prohibit most employers from accessing your credit records. Wisconsin State Representative Kim Hixson has also drafted a similar bill. Washington and Hawaii already have legislation in place that limits an employer's ability to obtain credit information when filling most positions.
