Quick and Reliable Solution Provides Means to Collect Vehicle Data in Real-World Driving Conditions

Sprint and Multi-Tech have worked together on many projects over the years. We needed a reliable modem solution that was easy and quick to integrate and we knew Multi-Tech could deliver. -Rich Gumbleton, Director, Business Markets Group for Sprint

Multi-Tech Systems, in conjunction with Sprint, is proud to provide key solutions to enable communications for the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, a $10 million dollar competition that aims to inspire the development of viable, safe and super fuel-efficient vehicles that are both production-capable and desired by consumers.

The 36 remaining contestant vehicles were tested for efficiency, performance and durability under real-world conditions at the Michigan International Speedway this month. An on-board data collection device, installed on each vehicle, makes this possible by sending information to a central server and the competition’s website http://www.fuelourfuturenow.org, which allows followers to monitor the progress of competitors. Multi-Tech cellular modems enable this data to be transmitted in real-time over the Sprint 3G Mobile Broadband network

“Sprint and Multi-Tech have worked together on many projects over the years,” said Rich Gumbleton, Director, Business Markets Group for Sprint. “We needed a reliable modem solution that was easy and quick to integrate and we knew Multi-Tech could deliver.”

“We are pleased to provide our proven device networking products to this worthwhile competition,” said Jim Cairns, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. "Multi-Tech’s cellular modems are used in countless transportation applications because they are carrier-approved, so the integration process is greatly streamlined. Some models combine cellular and GPS technology, making our intelligent modems ideal for telematics use.”

The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE held a a celebratory kick-off event on Thursday, April 29 at the Michigan State Capitol. Several other events are also planned, leading to the competition finals in July where the joint Sprint and Multi-Tech solution will be utilized to collect the data from the participating vehicles. Competition winners will be announced in September, 2010.

About the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize
The goal of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE is to inspire a new generation of viable, super fuel-efficient vehicles that offer more consumer choices. Ten million dollars in prizes will be awarded to the teams that win a stage competition for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 Miles per gallon or energy equivalent (MPGe). The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE will place a major focus on efficiency, safety, affordability, and the environment. It is about developing real, production-capable cars that consumers will want to buy, not science projects or concept cars. This progress is needed because today's oil consumption is unsustainable and because automotive emissions significantly contribute to global warming and climate change.
