The nationally acclaimed theater group, No Limits for deaf children, returns to New Jersey with its original play No Limits Believe It or Not! performing at the Tony Award winning theatre, Crossroads Theatre (7 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08901). The performance will be held on July 12th at 4 PM. Local cast members from the production have performed in previous No Limits plays and will be reunited for a special performance. “It is wonderful to have these children come back and perform again with No Limits. The friendships they have formed by participating in No Limits have been profound and enduring”, Executive Director Michelle Christie-Adams said.
One out of every 400 babies born in the United States per year has a significant hearing loss. For a parent who is learning of their deaf child’s future, it can be one of the most painful times of their lives. Dreams for their child are shattered and fears often overcome them. Yet, during this period of grieving, it can be the most critical time to teach their child language. Once the child receives hearing aids, a deaf child must be taught to listen, learn the meaning of words and actually learn to pronounce sounds. It can be an arduous process. To achieve maximum success, the learning must take place in an environment that is meaningful to the child.
No Limits provides a fun and creative environment for deaf children to learn language, through the theatrical setting. The positive experiences during the workshops and performances generate an abundance of language opportunities as well as improved self-esteem. The children learn to have courage to overcome obstacles, and to believe in themselves, even when others may not. For the first time, the children are not cast as a rock, a tree or in other non-speaking roles, but are continually challenged to use their voices. As a result, each child begins to feel comfortable speaking in front of others. They no longer feel isolated and disconnected with the world, but now feel comfortable approaching their hearing peers and forming friendships that once did not exist.
Founded in 1996, No Limits is a national organization reaching deaf children across the country. Based in Los Angeles, No Limits has received numerous accolades and awards, including “Best Arts Program in the Country” by Parents Magazine, “The Service to Mankind” Award by the Sertoma Organization and the “Special Recognition Award” from the California Educators for the Deaf. No Limits has been the subject of two documentaries for its revolutionary methods, and was recently featured on OPRAH as a positive and uplifting program.
