Aerohive Networks, creators of the award-winning cooperative control wireless LAN (WLAN) architecture, announced today that Framingham Public School District, an 8,300-student and faculty school system in Massachusetts, has fully deployed Aerohive’s WLAN system-wide.
Despite constricting IT budgets, Framingham Public School District sought to upgrade its obsolete network with a next generation wireless network infrastructure to provide reliable Internet connectivity to its 1,800 educators and 8,300 students. Furthermore, the district was resolved to make safety a top priority for its new project—ensuring students could not bypass content filtering.
Several WLAN products that the school investigated were both too costly and difficult to manage or had inherent limitations with the number of access points that the wireless network controller could support. Following their careful evaluation, the IT team selected Aerohive’s enterprise-class WLAN solution built on its Cooperative Control Wireless LAN (WLAN) architecture. The technology combines an enterprise-class access point with a suite of cooperative control protocols and functions that delivers the full benefits associated with controller-based wireless LANs – but without the additional burden and cost of hardware controllers or an overlay network.
“The students and faculty immediately embraced their new wireless access, and our students actually used the safer, content-filtered wireless LAN for Internet access,” said Adam Seldow, Ed. D, director of technology at Framingham Public School District. “Teachers were using their iPhones to take class attendance, and there were notebooks in use throughout the school. It was as if the network had always been there.”
Management of the network is provided through Aerohive's HiveManager NMS. HiveManager enables simple policy creation, firmware upgrades, configuration updates, and centralized monitoring throughout an entire Aerohive deployment, whether building-wide, campus-wide, or global – from within a single console. Because HiveManager is not actively involved in passing traffic or in making traffic forwarding decisions, it eliminates network bottlenecks and complexities of controller-based architectures, especially within distributed environments such as Framingham Public School District’s 15 campuses.
"We didn't want a lot of moving parts, such as having to set up a RADIUS server,” Seldow continued. “Instead, we looked for an alternative that could use direct Active Directory integration with the Access Point (AP). In addition, we didn’t want to worry about a wireless network controller that had a limit on the number of access points that could be associated with it."
The IT team at Framingham Public School District will continue using its Aerohive wireless network to make student life more productive while helping to preserve the district's budget. For example, school administrators – using a handheld phone or device – now can quickly access student information whenever needed anywhere on school premises. Also, students can use their cell phones as feedback devices for classroom participation. Such classroom "clickers" often cost thousands of dollars. And the Aerohive network, because it provides such strong and reliable connection, soon will be used to supplement the district's upcoming voice-over IP telephony effort.
