Susan Lenart Kazmer is an explorer, inventor and mixed media artist. During her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, she pioneered the integration of fibers and found objects with traditional metal smithing and jewelry techniques. As a contemporary builder of talismans, Susan creates one-of-a-kind pieces of personal adornment. Repurposing objects of modern-day culture, such as light bulbs, game pieces, typewriter keys, stubby pencils worn down by a class of second-graders, she reinterprets these artifacts into jewelry that is layered with spiritual and historical significance.
Her work has been recognized by the Smithsonian Institute of Art, the Huntington Museum of Art, the Ohio Craft Museum and the American Craft Council. As her innovative style became internationally known, it was the everyday designer who sought out Susan's extraordinary talent to learn how they, too, could turn commonplace objects into heartfelt, storied charms and jewelry. For more than 20 years, Susan has been traveling, researching, teaching and creating innovative techniques to advance the field of mixed media art jewelry.
Now, teaming up with Horizon Group USA, she brings the essence of her found object jewelry and the “Industrial Chic™” look to jewelry explorers at Michaels, North America’s largest arts & crafts specialty retailer. Each charm, a work of art. Each pendant, a reminder of a life past. Each piece, a journey of its own.
There are easy techniques designed to help get that fashionable "Industrial Chic™" look with a few quick and easy steps. Susan’s video series at http://www.michaels.com/videos/Industrial-Chic/ on Michaels.com. shows how to use eclectic disks, spacers and metal fibers, turn consecutively linked charms into a bracelet, make a simple ring with a ring blank and a charm or create a special "collection" of Industrial Chic™ charms on a pair of ear wires with spring rings, safety pins or wrapped wire loops, and much more. From these simple videos, any beginner will be designing like an Industrial Chic™ pro.
Susan also shares her insights, her belief in talismans and wonderfully simple techniques in an online introductory segment and in a project guide available at Michaels stores along with the Industrial Chic™ innovative charms, pendants and findings.
