‘Adult Beginner Ballet’ is a portrait of Kathy Mata, a dedicated ballet instructor, who is determined to teach adults (ages 16-80 years old) the beautiful and technically challenging art of ballet. ‘Adult Beginner Ballet’ is an inspiration for those who desire to dance or pursue other hidden aspirations. ‘Adult Beginner Ballet’ had its World Premiere at the Heart of Gold International Film Festival in Queensland, Australia in March 2010.
Ballet classes for adults are growing in popularity and play a significant part in the mind, body and spirit of these students. Properly taught and practiced, ballet helps to increase bone density, balance and strength.
In 2009, Filmmaker Michelle Ortega and her husband, Jason LaBatt, launched their own San Francisco-based video production business called, North Beach Digital. Michelle is a member of the San Francisco Film Society and Bay Area Women in Film and Media (BAWIFM) and is a past president of the San Francisco chapter of American Women in Radio and Television.
‘Adult Beginner Ballet’ is now a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. ‘Adult Beginner Ballet' is seeking donations to help pay for distribution to PBS stations nationwide. Contributions in behalf of 'Adult Beginner Ballet' may be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
