The National Park Service at Point Reyes National Seashore is scheduled to break ground in June on an extension to the Point Reyes Hostel. The new facility will be constructed according to LEED green building standards, and will include four private family rooms (each sleeping up to five people), a self-service kitchen, indoor and outdoor guest lounges, as well as living quarters for hostel staff.

The new facility is designed to maximize natural light and heat efficiency, and will include a photovoltaic solar energy system installed on the roof. Plans for the interior include cork flooring and recycled glass countertops, and the surrounding landscaping will feature native, drought resistant plants. The National Park Service aims to receive LEED Silver certification for the hostel's new building.

The Point Reyes Hostel is situated two miles from Limantour Beach, and is the only non-camping lodging facility within the National Seashore. A certified Bay Area Green Business since 2007, the hostel currently consists of two buildings -- the ranch house and the bunkhouse -- which include four shared dorm-style rooms, one private family room, a kitchen and dining room, and two guest lounges. The new building will add four private rooms as well as additional kitchen and lounge facilities.

"The additional private rooms will allow more couples and families with young children to stay in and enjoy the Point Reyes National Seashore, without having to hike-in camp," said Hanna Morris, general manager of the Point Reyes Hostel. "It being a LEED-certified building is testimony to the commitment of both Point Reyes National Seashore and Hostelling International USA to promoting environmental stewardship."

The hostel's expansion is funded largely by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and is scheduled for completion by the end of this year. The current hostel will remain open during construction.
