At a time when fitness centers throughout New Jersey are closing their doors in record numbers – due to falling memberships and the worst economy in decades, two NJ entrepreneurs are investing their hearts and souls and millions of dollars into building affordable new fitness centers throughout the state. Not only is the company chalking up some surprising successes, they are also setting a new standard for the future while are creating jobs in their communities.

The Grand Opening of Club Metro USA in Rutherford, NJ, on May 15, 2010 marked the fourth new fitness club that partners Emile Farina (President/CEO) and Mike Sullivan (VP/Co-Founder) have opened in the state in a relatively short time. With clubs already in Toms River, Newark and Jersey City, they have high hopes for Rutherford – even in today’s struggling economy. And their plans don’t stop here.

As ambitious as it sounds, Club Metro USA plans to open 30 new clubs in the coming year – bringing affordable fitness to New Jersey residents and adding hundreds of new jobs to the communities they serve.

As co-founder, Mike Sullivan, who supervises club equipment and layout construction for the company says, “There are always naysayers who don’t think a new fitness club can survive in today’s economy. But so far our clubs are thriving and beating the odds.” Sullivan credits the company’s business model for its success.

“We are not just gyms filled with workout machines. We are a trend-setting company of upscale fitness clubs with a resort style environment. Not only do members enjoy the benefits of the newest equipment, the most professional staff and outstanding customer service, but they also get treated like a special guests in a luxury hotel – all at prices most people can afford.”

A Healthy Outlook In An Unhealthy Economy

According to Paul Zane Pilzer, world-renown economist and author of The Wellness Revolution, the wellness industry has grown from $200 billion in 2002 to $500 billion in 2007, to a projected trillion-dollar industry in the foreseeable future, as per his recent book, “The Next Trillion.”

CEO Emile Farina, who oversees growth and business operations for Club Metro USA says Pilzer’s assessment was fundamental to their concept.

“There’s no question that wellness is the wave of the future and fitness should be part of everyone’s lifestyle,” says Farina. “We passionately believe in this concept and our business strategy is to make exercise affordable and fun for everyone who wants to work out, feel good and pursue good health.”

With basic memberships priced at $19.99/month, Farina says that by offering much more than typical “gyms” at this price and higher, we are setting new standards of excellence and are helping to improve both the physical and financial health of the people in the community. “While other fitness centers throughout New Jersey keep closing, our membership keeps growing. And with each new club, we add about 20 new jobs. We seem to be the perfect fit for today’s economy.”

Rutherford, NJ, Membership Climbs Even Before Grand Opening

While May 15 was the “official” Grand Opening, the new Rutherford club actually opened its doors on March 10 and franchise owner Frank Barone, a former Wall Street executive, lawyer, business owner and entrepreneur says he is thrilled with the results.

“The reception in the community has been phenomenal,” says Barone who was lured in by the overall model, design and unique concept of the club.

“When people walk through the door, they are not intimidated by its look and feel. Everyone feels welcome – you can see it on their faces and in their eyes. For the price, most people expect a typical no frills gym. Instead they get luxury – without hurting their pocketbook. There’s just nothing else like it out there.”
