Despite economic recession around the world, some aspects of research employment continue to buck the trend. Figures and projections for faculty, medical and market research continue to trend upward showing minimal job losses and job growth across the industry.
The lucrative Market Research niche
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, market and survey research jobs will increase by 28% between 2008 and 2018, faster than the average over the next few years. Holders of Masters or Doctorate degrees will have the greatest advantages with slightly more competition and fewer opportunities amongst holders of Bachelors degrees. Market and survey research jobs are also some of the better paying positions available to entry level researchers with the stats for these research jobs as follows, again courtesy of the U.S Labor Department:
Median annual wages of market research analysts in May 2008 were $61,070. The middle 50 percent earned between $43,990 and $85,510. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $33,770, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $112,410. Median annual wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of market research analysts in May 2008 were:
- Computer systems design and related services -- $77,170
- Management of companies and enterprises -- $65,880
- Other professional, scientific, and technical services -- $58,480
- Advertising, public relations, and related services -- $56,730
- Management, scientific, and technical consulting services -- $55,570
Median annual wages of survey researchers in May 2008 were $36,220. The middle 50 percent earned between $22,290 and $54,480. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $17,650, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $75,940. Median annual wages of survey researchers in other professional, scientific, and technical services were $26,440.
Those are not bad figures in today’s extremely competitive market. In fact, the statistics also show a significant number of faculty and scientific researchers are moonlighting in market and survey research.

Obvious but true – exaggerate but don’t lie. To get noticed you have to stand out and that means presenting yourself and your experience in the best possible light but remaining this side of the fine line of the truth. There is nothing worse than getting to the job interview stage only to find yourself floored by a question that requires you to uphold a lie or embarrassingly admit that you falsely represented yourself. Where is the line? Well, for example, if you attended a university but did not complete a degree, one way to present this information might be to put down the years attended, the university name and the course major but exclude any reference to a degree. If you did complete a degree, don’t claim honors you didn’t receive, just state simply what it is you did achieve and any work experience since to back up the academic credentials. If you blatantly lie on a job application or in an interview that is just cause for your employer to fire you at any time in the future AND you could be charged with fraud! So find the line and stay this side of it – that is this month’s job interview tip.
Don’t cut the research budget
The Canadian government has recently learned some hard lessons when they cut the public research polling budgets by more than half. Apparently, at a time when the Canadian government is undergoing some significant changes, the cut-back in the research budget (from 31 million to 8 million!) has left policy makers completely in the dark as to whether the changes are effective. Canadian polling company Ekos spokesperson, Frank Graves, reports on Mediawatch, “We have a policy community operating without evidence and empirical guidance. Every major debate from national unity, free trade, health care, bank reform should have extensive public opinion research to see what the public thinks.”
This opinion was substantiated in the Ottawa Citizen which reported that government budget officer Kevin Page was concerned about the lack of data available to gauge the performance of government policies and programs. Let that be a lesson to all – don’t cut the research budget.
