Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Legal Affairs Peter Taylor who also has responsibility for Intellectual Property, is pleased to announce an impending collaboration with world renowned musician and entertainer Akon and the Trinidad and Tobago music industry in a joint program that is intended to use music as a medium for social, economic and cultural development.
Akon has a remarkable track record for unearthing new talent . He recently embarked on similar initiatives in Africa, and it is hoped that this program would propel the music of Trinidad and Tobago further onto the world stage.
Trinidad and Tobago is a country with a rich, diverse cultural and ethnic heritage with a cosmopolitan population. This country has given the world various musical genres including Calypso (Kaiso), Soca , Chutney, Rapso and Extempo to name a few. Trinidad is also the land that gave the world the only new musical invention of the 20th century, the steelpan.
The collaborative effort is intended to use musical and cultural fusion as a medium of empowerment particularly for the youth of Trinidad and Tobago to encourage them to use their talents for upward social and economic mobility.
Minister Taylor specially expresses his thanks to Mr. Rauf Ashraf for being instrumental in making the collaboration a reality just as he has done previously with Akon and his performances with Peter & Warren Buffett.
He is known as one of the most successful and versatile R&B singers of the 21st century, grossing over 30 million dollars a year according to Forbes. Akon often sings hooks for other artists and is currently accredited with over 300 guest appearances and 40 Billboard Hot 100 songs. He is the first solo artist to hold both the number one and two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 charts twice. He has had 6 Grammy Awards nominations and has produced many hits for artists such as Lady Gaga, Colby O'Donis and Leona Lewis. Lady Gaga and T-Pain are two artists who were given their chance at fame by Akon.
