Celebrity Ambassador for the USO’s Songs for Soldiers initiative, Paris Hilton said, “When I first heard about the USO’s Songs for Soldiers initiative it immediately touched my heart.
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 24, 2010
On Wednesday May 26th, the USO (United Service Organizations) will host its annual Fleet Week event, ‘A Swingin Salute to Our Troops’ with special guest Paris Hilton attending as Celebrity Ambassador for the new ‘Songs for Soldiers’ program. Ahead of the Memorial Day holiday, Paris Hilton will join the USO to drive awareness for Songs for Soldiers, which offers a new way for Americans to express their gratitude for US troops serving overseas. (Tickets to the event available for purchase at http://www.usonyc.org/sfslaunch).
With over 180,000 troops currently deployed, the goal for the Songs for Soldiers Initiative (http://www.songsforsoldiers.us) is to provide portable MP3 players to every active service member through the support of Americans around the world. The program was created after a research study by the City University of New York found that U.S servicemen significantly rely on music to help them cope with the stress of combat.
The MP3 players will contain dozens of songs from ‘To The Fallen Records’, music written and performed by veteran and active duty service members, along with other celebrity videos thanking the recipient for his or her service. Celebrities who have recorded personal messages include TV host Anne Curry and actress Linda Hamilton. Several other artists are currently in discussion with Songs for Soldiers to come aboard and donate their music, with further announcements to follow.
Celebrity Ambassador for the USO’s Songs for Soldiers initiative, Paris Hilton said, “When I first heard about the USO’s Songs for Soldiers initiative it immediately touched my heart. It’s so easy to take for granted our freedom and happiness and forget about those who are endangering their lives everyday to make it possible. Songs for Soldiers is a simple way to show your thanks and I encourage the American public, and other celebrities to support our soldiers overseas through this worthy cause.”
Tom Wiggin, founder of the Songs for Soldiers program said, “We are excited to have partnered with both the USO and Paris Hilton on this important program. For close to 70 years the USO has been supporting our troops and we are proud to have Songs for Soldiers associated with this legacy.
We are also very thankful to Paris Hilton for coming aboard, she is an internationally known trend setter who we believe can lead a young generation of patriots toward new ways to support our troops.”
”With troops shouldering the burden of heavy deployments, morale-boosting initiatives like Songs for Soldiers become even more important. We are excited to have Paris Hilton as a celebrity ambassador, with the hope that others will follow in her footsteps,” said Brian Whiting, president and CEO, USO of Metropolitan New York.
The Songs for Soldiers program was created by actor Tom Wiggin and entrepreneurs Jennifer Dumas and David Choi. The three are partners and US distributors of Flatflash Duo (http://www.flatflashgroup.com), a technology company based out of Fairfield, CT. The group was inspired to create the program after seeing Professor Jon Pieslak of the City University of New York’s research study where he interviewed dozens of U.S. service members about why they listen to music and why it’s so important with helping them cope with the stress of battle. Today, almost every service member relies on an MP3 player to listen to songs that help them deal with combat and feel a connection to home. This inspired the company to launch a charitable initiative with their product later partnering with the USO to help build awareness. The program is designed to garner the support of all Americans regardless of individual political alignment.
The USO Songs for Soldiers MP3 players, created by FlatFlash Duo, are the size of credit cards and feature a simple cord converter that connects to the headphones. The players are weatherproof, sand resistant, heat/freeze resistant, durable and lightweight. In addition to playing music files, the MP3 players can also store pictures, video and documents, fitting easily into a wallet or small pocket. The players cost $29 and are available at http://www.songsforsoldiers.us or through the USO's website http://www.usonyc.org, and are fully tax-deductible. All donors can include a written message to service men and women with their donation.
