IRIS, the UK’s largest privately owned software provider, has used FreeAgent technology to power its new cloud accounting service, IRIS OpenBooks, launched today.

This is the first time the award-winning FreeAgent software, pioneered by Edinburgh-based startup FreeAgent Central, has been licensed. IRIS dominates the UK accounting market with 50 percent (14,000) of the UK's accountancy practices as customers.

The news marks a significant milestone for FreeAgent Central which first launched its flagship product, FreeAgent, in 2007. Since then the innovative service has grown rapidly attracting a devoted following of small business owners, currently with 2500 subscribers and this figure growing in excess of 10 percent every month.

Ed Molyneux explains: “We are delighted to be working with IRIS and we believe that IRIS OpenBooks will revolutionise the accountancy market, liberating small businesses from out-dated technology and allowing accountants to offer real-time business advice through a dashboard that shows the up to date financial position of each small business client.”

FreeAgent is simple but powerful online accounting and invoicing software. Unlike most accounting software packages, FreeAgent is designed for users without an accounting or book keeping background.

IRIS’s launch of IRIS OpenBooks is in response to significant levels of interest in cloud accounting solutions from their existing customers. IRIS OpenBooks integrates directly with the existing IRIS Practice Suite of software and enables accountants to connect in real-time with their clients' accounting data.

As a web-based service IRIS OpenBooks ensures small business owners have 24 hour access to a clear and accurate view of their financial position, whether they are in the office, at home or on the move.

Phill Robinson, managing director of IRIS APS, said: “Book keeping software is used by many small businesses, but is difficult to use or shrouded in jargon. Others may be stuck using spreadsheets. IRIS OpenBooks is a no-nonsense easy to use, jargon free web-based solution designed to help small businesses get control of their finances, whilst also giving the same real-time picture to their accountant.

“The majority of small businesses are under-supported by their accountant. This is due to infrequent communication, and the low quality of bookkeeping data often provided by business owners. IRIS OpenBooks overcomes these problems and allows practices to enhance their service offering to small businesses. Not only does this allow accountants to add greater value to even their smallest customers, the process for doing so has become much more efficient and, subsequently, more profitable.”

IRIS OpenBooks, powered by FreeAgent, will help accountants to redefine their relationship with small business clients by removing the hurdles associated with keeping the books up to date and with sharing data. Accountants using FreeAgent are already finding that they can provide better value to small businesses as advisors rather than number-crunchers.

Business owners themselves are finding that a jargon-free, online service - which uniquely projects their tax liabilities as well as working out their accounts - helps them understand and stay on top of their finances more easily.
