“Concrete is earthy. The material itself implies a rough tactile sensation that is imperfect and unpretentious. It beckons one to get close to it. Touch it and relate to it."

It was six years ago when artisan, Mona Hoffman ditched the corporate world and set out to learn the concrete countertop process from Cheng Design in Berkeley, Ca. Internationally recognized, owner Fu Tung Cheng is renowned for his understated designs and innovative use of concrete in homes. After a successful business launch and several years of crafting concrete countertops, sinks and fireplace surrounds for discerning clients, the allure of concrete as an art form led her to shift focus and today she applies her skills to crafting concrete lamps.
“Concrete is earthy. The material itself implies a rough tactile sensation that is imperfect and unpretentious. It beckons one to get close to it. Touch it and relate to it.”
Designers and homeowners alike appreciate the organic yet modern feel of these unique one-of-a-kind works of art. Strong, sturdy and stable, these concrete table lamps are at home in environments ranging from modern and contemporary to craftsman and rustic.
Hoffman’s portfolio is inspired by the old world charm of European villages and contemporary architecture. The result is a clean minimalist style mixed with the rusticity of materials in their raw and imperfect state. In stark contrast to the manufacturing world, her work, by design, yields unexpected results where flaws are in fact an artifact of the human touch on the material and are embraced as part of the products charm.
