Sandra Bauman, Ph.D., president of Bauman Research & Consulting, LLC (http://www.baumanresearch.com) in Glen Rock, New Jersey, will serve as the 2010-2011 president-elect of the New York chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (NYAAPOR), a national organization of professionals engaged in academic and commercial research. The New York chapter was founded in 1979 and has approximately 250 members from all realms of public opinion and marketing research. This is Dr. Bauman’s first position on NYAAPOR’s Executive Council.

"NYAAPOR was one of the first organizations I joined when I relocated to New York from Chicago in 1994, and its members were great ambassadors for the industry and the area,” said Bauman. “I'm looking forward to contributing my ideas and time to the association that has given me so much over the years: access to scholarship, exposure to new ideas and the opportunity to learn from colleagues." Members of the New York chapter as well as the national organization, the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR), are engaged in survey research, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and public opinion data.

Bauman has been an active AAPOR member since 1990, attending 18 of the last 20 AAPOR conferences. Over the years she has presented 13 papers at AAPOR, nine at the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research, and has also presented at the annual conference of the Council of American Survey Research Organizations and at NYAAPOR (http://www.nyaapor.org), most recently a workshop on “Ethnography.” This past year she served on the AAPOR Code Committee, and she has served on AAPOR’s Student Paper Competition committee and the Innovator’s Award committee. She also ran the post-conference survey for two years and has been a contributing writer to the AAPOR newsletter. In 2001, Bauman testified before Congress about public opinion toward privacy issues.

“It’s gratifying to be among colleagues with whom I can discuss the latest research methodology, debate issues related to research topics, and share the most up-to-date tools available that yield the most pertinent data., said Bauman. "By becoming more involved in NYAAPOR, I hope to widen my network of research and opinion professionals even more.” Members of the New York chapter are part of the national organization (http://www.aapor.org), which was founded in 1947. In addition to the AAPOR there are seven regional chapters nationwide, including New York. The association offers networking, educational workshops, and presentations, including some by notable political and media pollsters.

In addition to NYAAPOR, Bauman is active in the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners (http://www.njawbo.org) and received the state’s prestigious Business Woman of the Year Award in 2009 in recognition of her business growth and accomplishments, and her contributions to women. Earlier this year, she was honored by the NJ Legislature during the organization's annual Salute to Women Leaders Awards.

In over 20 years, Dr. Bauman’s research career has included academic research, election research, and commercial market research; she has designed and managed over 400 studies. She founded Bauman Research & Consulting, LLC, a full-service market research firm, in 2002. Bauman holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in journalism and a Ph.D. in communication studies from Northwestern University.

Bauman is also a member of the Marketing Research Association (MRA), American Marketing Association (AMA), the Interactive Marketing Research Organization (IMRO) and the Qualitative Research Consultants Association (QRCA). She has attained the Professional Researcher Certification at the “Expert” level from the MRA.
