In an effort to provide sun protective clothing with the smallest carbon footprint; SunGrubbies.com focuses their sun protection offerings on SPF fabrics utilizing textile fibers milled with minimal chemicals in the processing and of minimal pollution to the environment.

SunGrubbies.com, a leading online retailer of sun protective products since 1997, is pleased to offer “green” sun protective articles of clothing. In an effort to provide UPF clothing with the smallest carbon footprint; SunGrubbies.com has focused their sun protection offerings on fabrics utilizing textile fibers milled with minimal chemicals in the processing and of minimal pollution to the environment.

One example is the Ayana women’s 100% cotton tees made from California and Arizona grown cotton. The tees are sewn in Los Angeles where they are treated with zinc oxide applied while they are dyed with European accepted (more environmentally responsible) dyes. The designer rejected using bamboo fabrics when she read the FTC Alert: Have You Been Bamboozled by Bamboo Fabrics. She learned bamboo fabrics were “made using toxic chemicals in a process that releases pollutants into the air”.

Cocona is another state-of-the-art “green” fabric. The sun protection factor of the Cocona Sun Tee for women and Solar Polo for men comes from finely ground carbonized coconut shells. The carbonized shells used in the fabric are particles that are too finely ground to be used in water filters. The recycled coconut shells are spun into polyester yarn during the milling of the fabric. These tiny particles also have the added benefit of wicking perspiration and filtering pollution without adding additional chemicals.

Water clothing offered by SunGrubbies.com provides a maximum UPF 50+ sun protection by creating a physical block of tightly knitted microfiber nylon or polyester and lycra that do not need added sun inhibitors to reach their high UPF rating for sun protection.

All fabrics used by SunGrubbies.com are tested for their ability to block the sun’s UV radiation by an independent laboratory. The UPF rating in all of these garments will last for their lifetime which will further reduce its carbon footprint and save money.

To complement their environmentally friendly selection of sun protective clothing SunGrubbies.com now includes a line of all natural, non-chemical, biodegradable sunscreens and SPF lip balm.

“We all play an important role in protecting ourselves and our environment from pollution and chemicals harmful to our bodies,” says Marta Phillips, owner of SunGrubbies.com. “Making decisions to sell environmentally friendly products, which are also sun safe, is one way our small company can help in reversing harmful pollution that is affecting us all.”
