Former Military Officer vies for Mrs. Maryland America 2010

Former U.S. Army Captain, Raquel Riley Thomas has traded in her “Boots for Bikinis.” The reigning Mrs. Prince George’s County will vie for Mrs. Maryland America on June 12, 2010. The pageant will be held at 7:00 pm at the historic Avalon Theatre in Easton, Maryland.

I served my country in the U.S. Army, for 9 years with pride, dignity and respect. Winning Mrs. Maryland means the pageant and the community have rallied behind my platform (Veterans Employment), enabling me to continue my service to our country.

Former U.S. Army Captain, Raquel Riley Thomas has traded in her “Boots for Bikinis.” The reigning Mrs. Prince George’s County will vie for Mrs. Maryland America on June 12, 2010. The pageant will be held at 7:00 pm at the historic Avalon Theatre in Easton, Maryland.

Raquel is currently a Marketing Consultant at the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) in Washington, DC. She is responsible for implementing and developing state-of-the-art marketing and communication strategies that enhance the Department’s image. Seeing first-hand the issues regarding military veterans and their families, Raquel’s pageant platform will be “Veterans Employment: Taking care of Our Heroes and their Families.”

Raquel started her career in 1990 as a photojournalist in the U.S. Army. Her supervisors noted her professionalism, passion, and integrity and soon thereafter she was chosen to receive a Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship to Hampton University. Just 3 years later Raquel received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and went on to become an officer in the Army. After her tenure in the military, she became owner of PBR Studios, LLC.

Raquel’s accomplishments have been noted both in her military and corporate career. She has been selected as a “Leader of the Future,” by Ebony Magazine. She was also featured in “Who’s Who of America,” and as an added personal bonus, she was recently selected as Mrs. Prince George’s County, Maryland for 2010.

Raquel is committed to her community through her sorority Delta Sigma Theta, Inc and she is involved with Jack and Jill of America, Inc, an organization committed to nurturing and guiding children to become future leaders. Also known for her fashion sense and dedication to the promotion of the industry, Raquel is an active member of the Greater Washington Fashion Commerce Chamber.

Raquel makes her home in Maryland and is married to Ron Thomas, an attorney with LeClair Ryan Law firm (also former West Point football star.) They have two children, Maria and Sophia, along with a robot named R2.
