First National Bank of Pennsylvania Optimizes Network Efficiency, Reduces IT Operating Cost and Improves Customer Service Delivery with Plixer International’s Scrutinizer Network Monitoring Suite

Network traffic jams can wreak havoc on any business, but when money is quite literally on the line, the stakes are even higher. As a leading provider of commercial and retail banking, leasing, insurance and consumer financial services in Pennsylvania and Ohio, First National Bank of Pennsylvania relies heavily on its critical network infrastructure to process teller and ATM transactions and keep funds flowing smoothly across its 300 remote sites.

When bandwidth issues began inexplicably clogging the system, the company turned to Plixer International’s Scrutinizer NetFlow and sFlow Analyzer to gain visibility into network traffic, streamline troubleshooting and boost traffic flow.

When data transmission slowed to a crawl and sluggish response plagued critical systems (some of which stopped altogether), even FNB’s VoIP phone calls began to drop and suffer poor quality. Determined to find a monitoring solution that would provide the visibility needed to generate traffic insights, senior network engineer Mark Arblaster pitted Scrutinizer against three other competing products in a grueling 30-day trial.

“In the end, we went with Scrutinizer because of its usability, cost-effectiveness and the amount of data that the program collects,” Arblaster said. “After the 30-day trial was up, we immediately purchased Scrutinizer.”

Where competing solutions failed to provide comparable scalability, and others required the costly purchase of new equipment, Scrutinizer’s powerful NetFlow and sFlow analysis solution scaled elegantly to provide the robust monitoring features FNB needed across its network right out of the box and at an affordable price point.

One of the first big tests for Scrutinizer came soon after implementation when scores of employees attempted to access an internal Flash video link simultaneously, sending bandwidth consumption over the edge and VoIP call quality plummeting in the customer call center.

“With Scrutinizer, we were able to quickly determine where the traffic was coming from and remove the link—all in a span of about ten minutes,” Arblaster said. “Our old solution would’ve taken ten minutes just to load.”

In operating costs alone, Scrutinizer has saved FNB $32,000 annually and improved troubleshooting time by 50 percent versus the month-to-month pricing of its previous network monitoring solution.

“With Scrutinizer, the only recurring cost was maintenance, and that cost for the entire year was $800 less than the monthly cost on the old solution—a program that only covered four sites,” Arblaster said. “The time to find the information you’re looking for is a lot shorter with the dynamic capabilities and easy layout of Scrutinizer.”

Where the previous product retained data for only 48 hours, Scrutinizer stores historical network data for as long as needed. Arblaster says this historical data has been crucial to important forensic work. As an important residual benefit, Scrutinizer enables the FNB IT team to quickly and easily verify complex network configurations to ensure proper data flow over the right paths.

Plixer’s NetFlow and sFlow analysis solutions are used to monitor traffic across some of the largest data networks in the world, including those of Blue Cross, Citizens Bank, Visa, Intel, Cisco Systems, Chase, Paramount Pictures, AGFA, Turner Broadcasting, ABN AMRO, and more.
