A popular Facebook group titled “My pet is a part of the family, not just an animal” has over 300,000 members and continues to grow. A 2009 Gallup poll found that 91% of pet owners agree that their pets are a part of the family. This growing trend of pets as family members is fueling the burgeoning pet memorial industry, as people search for meaningful, unique and expressive pieces of art to memorialize their dearly beloved furry family members.

Sculptor Suanne Martin is crafting busts and full size pet memorial sculptures for Peternity.com in bronze patina (on a hydrocal or aqua-resin) or single color wash patina - a simple white finish. By special request she can do sculptures in sterling silver, cast bronze or a hand-painted color scheme to match the colors of pets’ coat colors. Prices range from $2,750 to $3,100. Bases can be added for $225.

Working for various studios in New York, New Jersey and Chicago, Martin has made a living exclusively as a sculptor since 1991. Her main focus has been on sculpting human and animal forms, with a special emphasis on portrait studies and commissions, many of which can be seen in permanent museum installations across the US, Mexico and South America. In addition to her figurative work, Suanne has built a strong and growing clientele for her canine sculpture - highly detailed works that are cast in sterling silver, bronze and marble.

Martin traveled and studied extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East during her undergraduate years in college. Martin earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1991 from Pratt Institute in New York. Today she heads the sculpture department for a Fine Arts Academy in Long Island, NY.
