A WPL Publishing webinar scheduled for next week will advise construction professionals on how best to minimize the risks of building “green” structures in a tough economy.
There are new risks that green building projects can present to owners, general contractors, architects, engineers, and others who must build quickly, innovatively, and inexpensively while ensuring quality and avoiding lawsuits. Green building is relatively new to the construction industry and creates new risks for owners. Reports that building green costs the same or little more than traditional buildings can cause constructors to take on additional risks to get new business.
Being a successful green building contractor no longer requires that the most experienced team in green construction be hired. There is strong evidence that the current economic climate is increasingly forcing contractors to commit to project budgets that often are only slightly higher for green buildings than for traditional buildings.
This 90-minute interactive program will provide construction professionals with important information about the five items they need to address to reduce risks on these innovative, lean-budget, and high-performance buildings:
- Taking on liability for emerging long-term building performance requirements that many green rating systems are beginning to implement.
- Identifying Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits in their projects that may add minimal value but dramatically increase risk. Green design and construction can increase a building’s complexity, but it also can increase the chance of building failure.
- Using new green products that have a very limited in-field service history.
- Implementing innovative and largely new technical practices with little expertise, a combination that can result in construction deficiencies.
- Codification of green that is occurring in the construction industry (such as the ASHRAE 189.1P Standard) and how this driver influences risk in constructed projects.
The webinar will help attendees do the following:
- Identify the increased risk in their green-designed and -constructed projects due to use of innovative products.
- Identify LEED credits in their projects that may add minimal value but dramatically increase risk.
- Understand the technical concerns of green building failures.
Providing the advice will be George DuBose, vice president of building consulting services for Orlando-based Liberty Building Forensics Group. He has lectured on building performance problems for more than 10 years and recently co-authored a mini-monograph entitled “The Hidden Risks of Green Buildings: Avoiding Moisture & Mold Problems.”
After the presentation, there will be an interactive 10-to-15 minute question-and-answer session addressing relevant topics.
