When summer hits Winter Park and the Fraser Valley, there’s no question that it’s time to get outside and run, hike, bike, skate, fish and take in the region’s wide-open spaces.
A few of the major summer events in the Colorado Rocky Mountain community include:
July 3: Rendezvous Run for Independence – The annual five-mile run/walk on the Fraser River Trail starts at 9 a.m. at Winter Park Resort and finishes at the Ski Broker in Fraser. An awards ceremony and giveaway will take place after the race, along with a pancake breakfast by the Fraser River Valley Lions Club. Shuttles will be available in Fraser and at Winter Park Resort before and after the race. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Scott Hughes Foundation, which provides scholarships to the YMCA of the Rockies for children with kidney disease, and Children’s Hospital. July 4: Lance Gutersohn 4th of July Celebration and Fireworks – The free community event takes place at the Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District Ball Fields, 4-10 p.m. Drawing more than 4,000 residents and visitors, the celebration includes sporting games, kid’s activities, hot air balloon rides, a community picnic, live music, carnival games, face painting, and fireworks at sundown.
July 10: KYGO High Country Music Festival – A free music show featuring country music’s up-and-coming Chris Cagle, The Josh Abbott Band and Kory Brunson will take place at Hideaway Park in downtown Winter Park.
July 15-18: USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships – SolVista Bike Park at Granby Ranch (named “Best Mountain Bike Park” for 2010 by Denver’s Westword newspaper) will host thousands of professional and amateur racers on world-class terrain in cross country, downhill, super downhill, mountain cross and short-track races. Visitors will find opportunities to compete, volunteer or just watch the action.
July 16-18: 19th Annual Fat Tire Classic and Cruiser Bike Party – The Fat Tire Classic draws both mountain bikers and hikers of all levels to explore the 600 miles of trails in Winter Park-Fraser Valley and enjoy live entertainment. The Classic will feature different trails on Saturday and Sunday, fully supporting each day with aid stations, route marshals and sag wagons. In addition to the mountain routes, a Family Fun Ride will follow the paved Fraser River Trail from Winter Park Resort to the town of Winter Park. The trail also is accessible.
The Cruiser Bike Party, taking place July 17, 2-8 p.m., at Winter Park’s Hideaway Park, will feature live music by Kahuna Beach Party, a bike decorating contest, bike stunt team, cruiser bike parade and dinner. Adults can enjoy the awards ceremony and Avery beer at the Cooper Creek Square cocktail cruiser, 4-10 p.m.

July 24-25: 28th Annual Winter Park Jazz Festival at Hideaway Park – The festival is host to food and craft vendors in an intimate setting surrounded by spectacular views. This year’s musical line-up includes performances by Chaka Khan, Brian Culbertson, Craig Chaquico, Dotsero, Boa & The Constrictors, Norman Brown’s Summer Storm, Boney James, Ryan Shaw, Hazel Miller and Jazz Del Barrio. A special after-hours jazz show will take place on Saturday night at Winter Park Resort’s West Portal Station. Tickets are available through the Winter Park-Fraser Valley Chamber of Commerce or Ticketmaster.
July 29-Aug. 1: Crankworx Colorado Freeride Mountain Bike Festival – The festival returns for its fourth year to Winter Park Resort. During four intense days, some of the world’s best mountain bike athletes awe spectators while battling it out for over $35,000 in prizes. This year, the festival will be home to the North American Championships, featuring the best slopestyle riders from around the world.
July 31: Mountainboard Big Air Show – The free show at Hideaway Park in downtown Winter Park attracts skateboard stunt performers and spectators.
July 31-Aug. 1: Mountain Bike Capital USA™ Weekend – Winter Park & The Fraser Valley lays claim to the “Mountain Bike Capital USA™” moniker for its more than 600 miles of marked and mapped trails. The weekend will encompass a bike expo and bike decorating contest at Hideaway Park, and guided bike tours for all abilities throughout the area.
Aug. 6: Concrete Rodeo Skate Park Competition – A national tour stop for the Concrete Rodeo competition, this skate competition is open to eight age groups in all skating abilities. For more information or to register, visit http://www.concreterodeo.com.
Aug. 7: 103.5 The Fox Winter Park Music Festival – The free show, also at Hideaway Park in downtown Winter Park, will feature Night Ranger, Pat Travers and the Groove Hawgs.
August 14: Winter Park Beer Festival – This new festival, at Hideaway Park in downtown Winter Park, will feature 25 brewers, food vendors and live music. Tickets are available at http://www.playwinterpark.com.
Sept. 4: High-Altitude Battle of the Bands and Boards – The final skating event for the summer will team skateboard and music competitions.
