George Fox University’s School of Business will offer a new bachelor’s degree in marketing when undergraduate classes resume this fall.
The marketing major is designed to prepare students for management-level jobs in marketing, sales, retail merchandising, promotions, product development, marketing research and international marketing. The major includes 60 semester hours of study and covers topics ranging from target market analysis and communication strategies to product pricing, consumer behavior and global marketing.
The major is one of five new offerings in the George Fox School of Business. Also added this fall will be bachelor’s degrees in finance, global business, entrepreneurship and management. The new majors will replace the current business administration major, which included concentrations, and will thereby give students more specialized majors of study in various business disciplines.
The school will retain its other two undergraduate business majors, in economics and accounting.
“We’ve found there is a demand for majors that specialize in these areas of business,” said Dirk Barram, interim dean of the School of Business. “Not only is there student interest, but as a school we want to continue to expand our curriculum and offer greater depth and breadth in our courses. Students have told us they want more than simply concentrations in these areas; they want majors that give them more specialization in their area of interest. We believe this will give them an even greater opportunity to succeed once they graduate.”
To accommodate the expansion of course work, the School of Business has hired six additional faculty members over the past two years, including one professor from England and, for this fall, two from China.
The school is also requiring students to earn 60 semester hours in each of the new majors, an 18-hour increase over the 42 required previously.
Ultimately graduates of George Fox’s School of Business are prepared for professional careers or for graduate training in business or other areas. Many go on to earn their MBAs, start their own companies, and become successful executives in all sectors of business, according to Barram.
In addition to its undergraduate programs, George Fox offers a Part-Time MBA program at its Portland Center near Tigard, in downtown Portland, and at the university’s Boise Center in Boise, Idaho. Also offered is a Full-Time MBA program at its residential campus in Newberg, Ore.
In addition, the School of Business offers a 56-credit-hour Doctor of Business Administration program that prepares Christian business educators to teach effectively in the college or university classroom. The three-year course features online classes, web-enhanced hybrid courses, and three residency visits to its Newberg, Ore., campus.
