Indiana Chooses Code Council Plumbing Code to Promote Safe Construction

The International Code Council’s (ICC) Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Group has been extremely busy over the past few months, supporting building departments that have chosen to update to the Code Council’s International Plumbing Code (IPC) from other outdated codes. The State of Indiana has just been added to its extensive list of recent accomplishments as it prepares to transition to the 2006 International Plumbing Code. Once the IPC is in place, it will complete Indiana’s adoption of core ICC codes.

Whittier, CA (PRWEB) June 7, 2010

The State of Indiana has just been added to the growing and extensive list of jurisdictions, choosing the International Code Council®’s (ICC®) International Plumbing Code® (IPC®) for updating from other outdated codes.

The Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission (IFPBSC) is the division of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security that reviews, adopts and enforces building, fire safety, and energy efficiency codes. The Commission has previously chosen to adopt the International Building Code®, International Residential Code®, International Fire Code®, International Mechanical Code® and the International Fuel Gas Code®. The Commission’s action will result in the publication of the 2011 Indiana Plumbing Code to match the remaining core codes already in place statewide.

Once the IPC is in place, Indiana’s building department and other governmental agencies, along with all six million residents will enjoy greater peace of mind in knowing that the buildings and other structures in their communities are built to meet the standards of the International Codes. Since the International Codes have a consistently clear, easy-to-use sequence and are fully integrated, building departments and construction professionals also realize greater efficiency in enforcing and following the code.

The list of members serving on the 2011 Indiana Plumbing Code Review (IPCR) Committee that will propose amendments represents every major building-related governmental official and organization throughout the State. These representatives include the: American Institute of Architects; American Council of Engineering Companies; Indiana Association of Building Officials; building owners and plumbing engineers; Indiana State Department of Health; Indiana State Plumbing Commission; International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials; International Code Council; Mechanical Contractors Association of Indiana; Plumber, Steamfitters and HVAC Service Technicians Local 440; Indiana Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association; and the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute.

“We are very pleased and proud that the State of Indiana has decided to select the Code Council’s plumbing code as a base document for updating the State’s plumbing code. It will complement all of the other International Codes previously adopted,” said ICC CEO Rick Weiland. “With the selection of this code, following and enforcing the fully integrated suite of International Codes will be so much easier and streamlined for Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security, Division of Fire & Building Code Enforcement as well as the construction professionals who implement it.”

Bob Neale, Regional Manager, State and Government Relations for the ICC added, “We have been working closely with Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security, Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission/Code Services, the Fire and Building Code Enforcement Division, as well as chapters and organizations to share comprehensive information and answer all of their questions so that they could approach the decision making process with a strong knowledge base. We look forward to continuing the long and solid partnership that the ICC and the people of Indiana initiated over a decade ago.”
