LIQUID NAILS Adhesive Provides Tips on Creating the Perfect Garden Retaining Wall

Backyards often represent a little bit of paradise just past the sliding glass door. They are where homeowners spend long summer days swinging in hammocks and entertaining friends with barbecues and volleyball.

One way to enhance the beauty and functionality of a backyard is to install a garden retaining wall. These low retaining walls provide aesthetic covers for slopes while helping to keep soil in place, preventing erosion. They also provide attractive places for plants and shrubs to grow and additional seating options for social gatherings.

Whether doing it yourself or calling in a professional, it’s important to know the benefits that adhesives provide to retaining wall projects.

Benefits of Adhesives
Latex subfloor adhesive is used to lock landscape materials into a single, unified structure. When adhesive is added as a fastening mechanism, a flexible bond is created that will withstand seasonal movement and temperature extremes. This helps with the longevity of the wall.

LIQUID NAILS® Brand provides a subfloor adhesive formulated for demanding projects. This versatile adhesive bridges gaps, provides 10 minutes working time to allow for position changes, and produces a long-term, durable, flexible and impact-resistant bond. It also contains antioxidants, which provide for long-term performance.

“LIQUID NAILS Brand Subfloor Adhesive has exceptional holding power, is excellent at gap filling, can handle extreme weather conditions and is waterproof and weatherproof,” said Mike Goldstein, senior brand manager for LIQUID NAILS Adhesive. “Using subfloor adhesive is an inexpensive way to provide long-lasting durability when building a retaining wall.”

The adhesive, available in 28 fl. oz. and 10 fl. oz. sizes, is available at home improvement stores nationwide.

How to Use Adhesive
Before beginning the project, make sure the surface is clean, dry and structurally sound. Note that the use of adhesive to bond wall elements is suitable only for wall heights of three feet or less. Higher walls require professional engineering design and the use of mortar.

Adhesives and caulk guns can seem intimidating, but Goldstein says they shouldn’t be. “You just need to cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle and puncture the inner seal with a nail or wire. After that you’re ready to apply two ¼-inch beads to each piece that needs to be bonded, one near the front and one near the back. It’s that easy.”

Other Tips
When building a retaining wall, a trench will need to be dug in order to anchor the structure. Call the federally-mandated national “Call Before You Dig” number 811, or visit http://www.call811.com to ensure utility lines aren’t in the way.

Pick stones that are flat on the top and bottom. Heavy stones help provide more force against the wet soil that will be pushing against the wall. To increase longevity, create a base that is roughly half the wall’s height.

Ensure that the stones are level throughout the project. Once the stones are laid, place landscaping fabric behind the wall. This keeps soil from filtering through the stones.
