This spring, Northridge Inn and Resort played host to members of Dance About, an outreach program of the National Ballet of Canada, while they performed in North Muskoka Ontario at two schools in the Near North District School Board.

Northridge Inn & Resort (, an upscale all-season resort on Lake Bernard in North Muskoka, had the rare opportunity to host members of the National Ballet of Canada's About Dance outreach team when they were in the area to perform at two local schools. "It was a real privilege to host members of the National Ballet of Canada at Northridge Inn," says resort owner Michael Piraino. "One of the pleasures of running a resort is the wide variety of interesting people that you meet. It was a rare treat indeed to welcome these very talented and gracious individuals who were staying here while they performed for the lucky children of our local area schools. Some of these artists are world renowned. We can honestly say that if there is any truth to the whole "prima donna /diva legend", we certainly didn't see anything to support it. In fact, everyone was very friendly and down to earth. They were kind enough to let us know that they really enjoyed their stay at Northridge Inn, so much in fact that they found it difficult to leave," says Piraino.

On March 30, 2010, the National Ballet of Canada's notable outreach mini-show Dance About performed two sold out shows in North Muskoka, at Maple Ridge Public School in Powassan and Sundridge Centennial Public School in Sundridge. Both performances were extremely well received by the appreciative students and staff members who attended. Highlights of the performance included a selection of dances from The National Ballet of Canada's repertoire. Students also had the opportunity to participate in mime demonstrations. As well, the program featured demonstrations of basic ballet exercises, pointe work, partnering, make-up and wardrobe, and the creation of exciting and dramatic characters. The travelling company that comprises Dance About includes four dancers, a piano accompanist and a narrator. The narrator guides students through a typical day in the life of a dancer, from ballet class, with the daily ritual of stretches and exercises, to a performance. The young audience was thrilled with the presentation and learned a great deal about all the hard work that is involved in staging a ballet.
Dance About has been going to schools throughout Ontario for over 40 years. It was created as a means of giving children from various socio-economic backgrounds and cultures the opportunity to experience classical ballet. Dance About brings ballet to children who may never otherwise have had the chance to attend, letting them experience classical ballet in their own school environment. Sponsored by Scotiabank, this is the first season that Dance About has travelled to Ontario's Near North.
"Dance About is a terrific program, especially for kids in rural areas like here in Ontario's Near North, where few have the chance to travel to Toronto to see the ballet. The people who run Dance About are very dedicated and extremely generous with their time. We would love to see them back next year. I know that they would be pleased to come back as well. Ernie Abugov, Dance About's stage manager, told us that in his forty years of managing school tours, his trip to Sundridge was one of the best ever. We'd be thrilled to welcome them back anytime," comments resort owner Piraino.
