Children’s Cancer Center Seeks Applicants for Its 2010-11 Scholarship Program

The Children’s Cancer Center is offering educational scholarships for Florida students who have been diagnosed with cancer or a chronic blood disease and have been treated in the Tampa Bay area. The deadline for applicants is June 30. Applications are available on the Center’s Web site at

The Children's Cancer Center ( has announced that it is seeking applicants for its 2010-11 Scholarship Program. June 30 is the deadline for submitting an application.

The Center sponsors the advanced education scholarships with the support of the Ackerman family in memory of Jason Ackerman, a University of South Florida student who was a volunteer at the center prior to his death. The program is also made possible by contributions and grants from the community.

The Children's Cancer Center is located at 4901 West Cypress Street in Tampa and serves the Greater Tampa Bay area, particularly those children being treated at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and St. Joseph’s Hospital Tampa.

“Diagnosed Children and their families endure many challenges,” said Patricia O'Leary, Chief Operating Officer of The Children’s Cancer Center. “Scholarships help with the financial burden many of these young adults and their families are faced with”

The newly appointed COO brings more than 20 years experience working with children and their families in academic crisis. After earning her degree in education, she spent the last decade as the Executive Director and franchise owner of Huntington Learning Center, a supplemental education program. She has directed schools in New York, Seattle, Orlando and Tampa.

With her experience as a parent, a career in education, business background and understanding of matters involving children and families, O’Leary has brought a new vision and direction to the center. She said that one of her key goals is to make the scholarship program a top priority.

Those available advanced education scholarships are for undergraduate degrees from a public university, college, community college, vocational technical school or other approved program. In order to be eligible, an applicant must be:

-Diagnosed with cancer or a chronic blood disorder before the age of 21.
-Treated medically for their condition in the Tampa Bay area.
-Accepted by an accredited university, college, community college or vocational/technical school. (A copy of a letter of acceptance must be included with the application.)
-A current legal resident of Florida.
-Complete the application and provide all requested attachments.
-Must have a 2.0 GPA and maintain it in order to renew the scholarship.
-Complete 20 hours of community service per year either at the Children's Cancer Center or other non-profit organization.
-Be a positive representative of the Children's Cancer Center.

According to organizers, scholarships in 2010 will be awarded in increments of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,000, with a minimum of $1,000. Scholarships of $5,000 and below will be renewable annually hereafter with a maximum of $10,000 per lifetime based on the applicant meeting the scholarship criteria. Checks will be made out directly to the school and not to students or their families.

The deadline to submit an application is June 30. Recipients will be chosen by the Children’s Cancer Center Scholarship Committee and announced by July 30. Applicants may be contacted for personal interviews, organizers said.
